Default Marleau set to tie/eclipse Gordie Howes games played record...1767

An amazing achievement to be sure and both guys from small town Saskatchewan to boot.

I will say though that Gordie also played over 400 games in the WHA, which is mind blowing.

But the single most amazing stat i may have ever seen in regards to the NHL belongs to Mr. Marleau and that is this...as found on the twitter

Mind blowing stat>> Patrick Marleau of #SJSharks has appeared in at least one game with 37% of every #NHL player who has ever played in the 104 year history of the league (3009 of 8100)

Never been a big Marleau fan but that’s a pretty cool accomplishment

Thought that was one of those unbreakable records. A truly impressive feat for Marleau. Was never a fan, but I tip my cap to this.

Gordie also took off 3 years between Detroit and WHA.

Why is that? Pretty solid all around player, plays hurt, doesn’t complain when C ripped off his jersey, well liked by teammates (except for Roenick....wait...you don’t like JR do you?) and the community down here.

Purely out of curiosity, but what's not to like? The teams he's played for, I get that, but really, other than that, what?

Long career, no doubt.

Career highlight - sarich hit in the playoffs that kicked off the comeback that game.

Curious - did Gordie go through any lockouts or shortened seasons?

The first 3 seasons of his career, the NHL regular season was 60 games long. For the next 18 seasons, it was 70 games. The final 4 years of his first stint in the NHL were 74, 76, 76, and 78 games long. His NHL return season was the only 80 game season he ever played.

Every season that Marleau has played was 82 games long except for these last 2 seasons and the 48 game 2012-13 season. Plus, the full 2004-05 season was lost.

Gordie played in 1,767 out of a possible 1,824 games. Marleau has done it in 1,802 possible games.

Due to lockouts and COVID, Marleau has had 129 games cancelled in his career. Without those, he likely would have passed Gordie a couple of seasons ago... but he'd likely still be chasing Jagr without the lockouts (and probably Messier too).

Probably the fact his face always makes him look worried about something

I have always been a bit of a Marleau fan, especially after he bounced back from the Sarich hit.

That said, I always get a little sad when a great of the game has their record broken by someone not quite as accomplished.

Most of his seasons were 70games. A few were 60, a few were 76.

Apples to oranges. Kinda pointless IMO to distinguish between then. Jagr belongs in the same convo; all 3 are crazy impressive in their own way.

Still pretty accomplished, going to be hall of famer. Only thing missing is a cup. 2nd overall pick, has two olympic golds, one world championship, one world cup.

That seems wonky. He played 8 games for PIT, 2 seasons for TOR, and the entire rest of his career for SJS, which was a 90's expansion team.

With the number of games, teams and decades that Jagr has played in, he'd have to he at over 50% if Marleau is at 37%.

It would be interesting to see what this stat is for Jagr.
It would also be interesting to see what this stat would be for Howe at the time of his retirement.

But you’re right that Jagr might be higher since he played more total years. Though his first decade there were fewer teams...

Yeah, I seem to recall hearing a similar stat for Jagr and it was ridiculously high. Jagr even played 2 games against Guy Lafleur as their careers overlapped by a season.

Since the founding of the league, 8,096 players have played at least one regular season game in the NHL. 4,826 of those have played at least one game since the start of the 1990-91 season when Jagr's career started. 4,099 have played at least one NHL game since Marleau's career started in 1997-98.

Should you be in the HOF for longevity? Marleau only scored more than 80 points twice. He was never the best C in the league - I don't think he ever won a major individual award.
