Flames Flames trade Rittich (50% salary retained) to Toronto for a 2022 3rd

Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
Leafs get goalie insurance. Flames retain 50 percent of Rittich's salary/aav. Which they needed to do to get it to a third-round pick

Quote:
The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that the hockey club has acquired goaltender David Rittich from the Calgary Flames in exchange for Toronto's third round selection in the 2022 NHL Draft. As part of the deal, Calgary will retain 50 percent of Rittich's contract.

Rittich, 28, has appeared in 15 games for the Calgary Flames this season and posted a 4-7-1 record with a 2.90 goals-against average and a .904 save percentage. In 130 career NHL games, the Jihlava, Czech Republic native has a record of 63-39-15 with a 2.83 goals-against average and a .908 save percentage. He represented the Flames at the 2020 NHL All-Star Game.

Rittich was originally signed by the Flames on June 13, 2016.

And we retained 50 percent, that’s not a very good return

Seems like a not so great deal for the Flames (the salary retention part.)

I like the return! There's probably a glut of goalies out there, so I'm totally okay with this value.

I'm surprised they got anything.

Lots of options out there.

Seems about right. It's in 2022, which is probably ideal since this is a weaker draft with way more uncertainty

That's another what? 1.25m in cap space? That's more room to do stuff.

And there it is. Liked him a lot but obviously wasn’t going to stick around with Markstrom signed long term.

I don’t hate the Leafs like many others do so I hope he and Brodie go on a run this year.

On an expiring contract when the Flames aren’t making the POs and therefore needing cap space, who cares about salary retention?

Happy with that, getting a replacement via free agency won't be difficult.
Good to add a pick
