It would only be "dodgy" if Backlund were somehow not living up to his salary. And yet, year after year he continues to be in the top-50 of the entire league at his position. Backlund is a $5.5 m player, and is paid accordingly.

I like backlund a lot, but if the plan is lindholm 1 and Monahan 2 then backlund needs to be traded. That's just to much for a 3c

I am fine with this, but this is a different argument than suggesting that Backlund is overplayed, or that his contract is a bad one.

However, I would counter that even if the Flames keep all three of Monahan, Backlund and Lindholm at centre, he still doesn't qualify as a #3 centre any more than one would regard Evgeni Malkin or Steven Stamkos as #2 centres.

Yesterday was a blow but I still feel oddly confident they'll surprise the hell out of us and make a run while Montreal crumbles.

I'm all in on this team.

If MTL half-asses/coasts through their games not against the Flames like they did against the Sens because they believe the top 4 are locked up, then that will be the reason it is cracked open again down the final stretch.

They're playing awful hockey and they will have a ton of games in a short period. They look very capable of putting the Flames destiny back into their hands.

What the Flames need is that (what I'm assuming is) abysmal PDO to level out.

Yes his playoff success is worthy of his salary.

Is the one center you said is “3rd line” really third on depth chart? I can almost guarantee you that Sutter looks at Backlund as the 2nd best center on the team. News flash CP.... Mony is third on the depth chart for center on flames right now .

I have no problem with Backlund but I think we need to take a sober look at who exactly is "earning" their salary for the club. We're a cap team year after year and aside from the 60 game stretch under Peters, we've been no better than a middle of the pack club. And this year much worse.

I'm not disagreeing with your post here. Just saying that it doesn't all add up. There is in fact an argument to defend every single player on the club and their contribution relative to salary. Sure Lucic is overpaid but lots of people will rush to tell you that every single club has a "mistake" on their roster and many are worse.

I guess we can blame it all on Gaudreau and yet he isn't actually making all that much.

In the case of Backlund, he might be a $5.5 million player but on this club, maybe he's not contributing enough to wins based on how the club is constructed.

But no I don't trust our luck/fortunes enough to pry the door open. We simply do not appear to get bounces this season when we require them. Meanwhile the Habs have perfected the rope and dope, mostly due to goaltending and lady luck.
And Ottawa only had 15 shots on goal.
