***Assuming that the police have the correct suspect***

Pretty amazing they could catch this guy. Not sure what they would have to go on or how they would ever be able to track this guy down.

According to the article it was due to "good old-fashioned police work".
Which for some reason I found to be an amusing quote in a tragic story overall

What a ####ty teenager. Bet he gets a light sentence because of his age and then he's back at 'er a couple years later.

Also sucks the media can't name him.

I don't know why, but this thought just popped into my head.

I really hope the rental company isn't going after them for the cost of the vehicle.

Was the reason why they couldn't remove the bullet is because it would make him unstable to transport back to Germany?

Probably a combination on forensics ballistics, social media analysis and interviews from witnesses and persons of interest.

I wonder if gun manufacturers should or are being required to do ballistics tests on all of the guns prior to selling them so that they are on record somewhere if law enforcement need to know where a particular gun was sold, etc.

we are having a hard enough time getting the wack jobs to agree to a basic registry of who owns a gun, lets not get ahead of ourselves here.

I heard that it was because removing it may have caused further damage. Hopefully there is a specialist in Germany who can do that.

It’s ridiclulous that they aren’t charging everyone in that vehicle. Each and every one of them should be charged with attempted murder.

This kind of thing just sickens me and makes me more frustrated at random, senseless violence for no apparent reason. How can we deal with this? What the hell was going through the kid's head when he fired this gun?

It seems like a lot of crime by youths / young people lately is by acting on impulse. Maybe it's always been that way but it just seems more prevalent now.

This is what got me curious.

However, Peters said Tuesday the bullet has now been successfully removed by German doctors and will be sent to Canada as a part of the investigation. A GoFundMe page raised more than $13,000 for the family.

Maryland tried it from 2000-2015 and scrapped the whole thing after it didn't help solve or prevent any crimes. The software was so bad that even after they logged all the scans, a search of a recovered casing would return hundreds of positive matches.

New York tried it and abandoned the project. And the Department of Justice and the National Research Council studied the value of doing it on a national level and concluded it was impractical and a waste of money.

If there were two people in the vehicle, and the driver turned the suspect in, I could see why there is only one suspect being charged. And that's just one scenario.

Yeah, let's not name-call here.

Lots of reasonable people are legal and licensed gun owners in Canada, 2.5 million to be exact.

For the sake of posterity:

1. Handguns are already in the either restricted or prohibited classification, in which case they're always registered

2. This was a prohibited firearm, so something prohibited by name and most definitely acquired illegally

Let's not confuse the issue. Criminals will never care to know what is and against the law, they'll just do whatever they feel like doing because 9/10 times they get away with it, and when they don't they're out in year or two (or less) and they can do whatever they want again, even if the crime was committed with a firearm.

But we're the "wack jobs" that have firearms for competitive shooting, have to go through countless hours of training and certification, daily police background checks, etc...

I took "whack jobs" meaning the various governments that have been in place in the last 20 or so years.

I hadn't heard the story about the German doctor removing the bullet. That's great that they were able to do so. Maybe it was a case of the Canadian hospital doing the basic life-saving stuff, but waiting for a specialist back home?

I'm glad there was an arrest made in this case.
