Can't get enough of the new Mastodon album. I rarely buy physical copies anymore, but this one I simply had to get. "The Hunter" and "Once Round the Sun" didn't really do a lot for me, but this one seems very much like a return to form. We'll see if it can challenge "Crack the Skye" in terms of longevity, but I wouldn't be surprised ... there are some seriously outstanding songs on there. They've always been great musicians, but I feel they've improved tremendously as vocalists and the balance between heavy riffs and catchy hooks is just right on "Emperor of Sand". Hats off!

Yep I've given it a couple of spins today and although one or two songs may have struck me as a little filler-ish, the album as a whole seems to stand out more than the previous two.

I've been a big Mastodon fan since the beginning. Personally, I really loved their sludgey sound on Lifesblood, Remission, and Leviathan. But I also really enjoy all their recent "progressive metal" albums since.

That being said, I think Emperor of Sand is my favourite out of their work post-Leviathan. The other albums I tend to enjoy a handful of songs more than the album as a whole, but I really enjoy this one top to bottom.

Still, their early albums were amazing IMO.

So different.

I'll get to the new Mastodon eventually, I would agree the last two albums have been meh, but that's the problem when you set a high standard. But I threw on Alien today and yeah there's really no doubt this is the pinnacle of insanity. Does it get any better than "I CAN'T EVEN EAT! AND I CAN'T EVEN ####ING PISS!". God bless you Devin.

So good.

Though the SYL song "Happy Camper" may have it beat for pure insanity:

I never really got into "Remission" and the other very early stuff. They won me over back then with some stuff on "Leviathan", especially the crazy country riff right in the middle of "Megalodon". And then there was "Seabeast", and its final 45 seconds almost made me want to go and hunt for Moby Dick myself.

Emperor of Sand is definitely the best they've put out since Crack the Skye I'd say, after having listened quite a few times. The Mastodon purists seem to really dislike Brann Dailor's increased vocal presence on the album, but I find that his soaring style is refreshing and brings a great emotional element to the album.

I like these guys, decent new thrash and I get a kick out of his vocals.

First song I heard from them on a cheap compilation I got at Recordland a while back.

Something off their new album

It's Insomnium for me 24/7 right now. Their latest album "Winter's Gate" is a masterpiece ... the remarkable thing about this one is that it's just one 40 minute long song. I was skeptic about it at first, but they manage to pull it off. Never gets boring and has a lot of great moments. Melodeath fans should check it out, sadly it's not on Youtube though.

Also discovering their discography by going backwards. Outstanding band.

Post #1145 of this thread from all the way back in September I posted winters gate. Somehow I've forgotten I had this album and now refreshing my ears. And oh the feast of melododeath perfection. Seriously, I do not think any band does melododeath better than insomnium, especially in the last three or four years.

Shade Empire is coming on fast and hard though, if you're digging insomnium, really give your ears a really good Shade Empire bath.

those who like "Winter's Gate" should also check out "Plague of Butterflies" by Swallow the Sun. Epic.

Just started listening to Bolt Thrower. Wow. They have some badass riffs.

Also my first time posting in this thread for some reason.
Metallica, Sepultura(85-96. Really like the Cavalera brothers), Slayer, Death, Tool, Testament, Overkill, Sodom are some of my favourite bands.
I'm a thrash metal guy but also dabbling into some Death Metal.

Also, one of my many favourites from Sepultura:

Schizophrenia by Sepultura is my favorite.

If you're into thrash, check out Darkest Hour and their break out album " Undoing Ruin" it's still on regular play to this day since it's release in 2005.

I'm going to make a list of albums constantly in rotation.

1. Raised Fist: Sound of the Republic
2. Darkest Hour: Undoing Ruin
3. Parkway Drive: Deep Blue
4. Gojira: The way of all flesh
5. Shade Empire: Omega Arcane
6. Insomnium: Above the weeping world
7. Dark Tranquillity: We are the Void
8. Cradle of Filth: Midian
9. Sepultura: Chaos A.D
10. 36 Crazyfists: Time and Trauma.

Oh man, Schizophrenia is such a great record. To The Wall is probably my favourite song off of it.
Anything from Morbid Visions/Bestial Devestation, Schizophrenia, Beneath the Remains, Arise, Chaos A.D. and Roots is just A+ in my books. I pretty much like every song on those albums. S'why old Sepultura is one of my favourite bands of all time.

Also really liked the music videos they made for those albums
Everyone should check out the music videos for these songs:
Sepultura - Inner Self(A favourite of mine)
Sepultura - Dead Embryonic Cells(I posted that above. Also a favourite)
Sepultura - Arise(Also a favourite)
Sepultura - Territory(A favourite)
Sepultura - Slave New World(A favourite)
Sepultura - Roots Bloody Roots
Sepultura - Refuse/Resist

Badass.

So I left black metal for last on my metal journey, and I left Burzum for last on that journey. Varg is obviously a pretty awful human being, but I suppose that doesn't change the fact that this is one of the best metal songs ever.
