The Roth era was my favorite, by far. So much attitude and killer chops. Live shows were stellar. Their cover tunes were made their own.

Speaking of covers...

Why cant we just really like them both? So many good tunes from each era, and both really great vocalists. Its a 7-UP/Sprite kinda thing.

I loved both.

If you wanted that Raw hard core rock sound that was a little unrefined then the Roth era is for you. I think musically they were better and a little more polished with the Hagar era.

I still loved that for a long time VH would book the absolutely worst opening acts that they could find. At one point they were rolling out Polka Bands. Or bringing in completely different styles of musical acts (Echo and the Bunnyman) that just riled up the audience before their performance.

I also felt that VH under Roth was just more energetic especially live. You went to party with Van Halen, you went to have your jaw dropped with Van Hagar.

And it just works

I've never heard Roth sound good live, but Hagars voice fills a stadium perfectly.
VH with Hagar was the worst concert I ever went to. Sammy lost his voice, the rest of the band was drunk. Virtually unknown Alice in Chains was much better as the opener. I've seen Dave live twice, once solo and once on one of the reunion tours. He was decent. His voice hasn't aged well.

I like most of it, with the exception of the ####ty keyboard songs (except for I'll Wait). I want to hear the world's best guitarist on the 6 string, not the piano.

VH2 might be my favourite album.

I saw David Lee Roth in the Dome for his Eat'em and Smile tour. Today that concert still stands as one of the better ones I have ever seen. It helped that he had Steve Vai and Billy Sheehan performing some of the greatest solos I have ever seen live but man it was a spectacle. I have seen a lot of bands that are all business. They come in play their stuff like pros and leave. Nothing wrong with that but Diamond Dave put on a show. All of that said I'm still a Van Hagar guy. I just feel the music was more polished, less juvenile, and more memorable for me.

Love the Costello quote, this might be my favorite though:

Money can't buy you happiness, but it can buy you a yacht big enough to pull up right alongside it.

I don't doubt sammy blew his voice and the band had a terrible show. I've only been able to go down the rabbit hole of live videos and I've never heard Dave sound half as good as the album live, but I've heard Sammy sound better than the album live.

If there is a Dave performance that can go toe-to-toe with this Sammy performance, I'd love to hear it:

This isn't even a song I particularly like, but holy hell does Sammy crush it live.

Always have loved Van Halen, and while there are some great Van Hagar tracks, its all about DLR for me:

1. Aint Talkin Bout Love (first VH song I learned on guitar, classic riff)
2. Unchained
3. Eruption
4. Panama
5. Hot For Teacher
6. Jump
7. Jamie's Cryin'
8. Everybody Wants Some!!
9. Why Can't This Be Love
10. Runnin With the Devil

I liked many of the tunes in the DLR era, but he was such a vapid dipsh@$ that I thought the band would be way better without him. I was wrong.
