Default Off-season Thread

Folks the off-season upon us.

This will be our second straight year of having more uncertainty with the off-season so we will need people’s patience. Things are particularly complicated by the fact that we ended our season far in advance of the NHL. This is important because we use 3rd party re-rating packages, to avoid any bias, and those are unlikely to come out until the NHL season wraps. Teams can trade players and make decisions without those new ratings just know that it is both an opportunity and a risk – as your expected rating may differ from what is in the package. But projecting this is part of the fun of the off-season.

Note that when we start to review potential re-rates the commissioners will be under a trade freeze. We will let the league know when this is happening

Here is the order I expect things to be in, at this stage. Again please appreciate the fluidity of everything so this may change.

- Resumptions of trading: Can start now. Please remember to update any draft picks exchanged in that thread
- Retirement of players under our new rules (I will retire these players this weekend, if not sooner)
- Rollover (TBD when Cam can do it, 1 year advancement on ages and contracts, will ask Cam to keep the draft picks for now)
- Releasing of players: Once the rollover is done. NOT before.
- Lottery: June 2nd (tentative, aligned to NHL schedule, save the date now!)
- Our draft: (July 17 10 am Calgary time, the Saturday before the NHL draft)
- Re-rates and new RFA/UFA grids (if re-rate packages are available earlier we will pull this ahead of the draft)
- RFA re-signing
- UFA re-signing
- UFA batches

A couple of immediate actions/reminders
- MOST IMPORTANT: If you are unsure if you wish to remain GM of your team please let us know sooner rather than later. It is only fair to the new GM that they have the off-season to prepare their team
- If you have any questions about rules, please ask
- Remember you do NOT need cap space to sign RFAs but you DO need cap space to sign your UFAs. And all UFAs re-signed are 3 years and 1 way. You cannot trade UFA rights. You must re-sign them or not sign them.
- If you release a player please post in the free agency thread. I will process the releases already submitted over the coming days.
- If you trade or acquire a draft pick please post in the draft pick thread
- You an email cphltrade any conditions that need to be deleted

Immediate things you should be doing:
- Prepare for the draft (as best you can)
- If you owe conditional picks in the 2021 draft – take care of them sooner rather than later
- Update your trade block
- If you have players on one way contracts down in the AHL, bring them back up to the CPHL, otherwise you won’t be able to submit UFA offers even for your own players
- Trade, trade, trade!

Couple other things
- You may not sign any free agents that are in the system already. The only ones you can re-sign are ones that aren't in the DB at all that you request to be added
- The watchdog is off its leash. You do not need to be roster or cap compliant in the off-season. Per above, you do need cap space to re-sign or sign a UFA

If anything is unclear PLEASE ask questions.

Thanks for this, Jiri.

For us new guys, is there an old UFA/RFA grid that we can check out to get an idea of what some of our free agents will cost to resign?

I don't know the appropriate place to remind people of conditions but here are a few conditions the Avs have that have draft picks in this upcoming draft associated with:

Special: Ducks to send a 2nd rounder for 2021 to the Avs before the draft.
Special: Colorado owes NYI a 4th in the 2021 draft IF Thornton has not retired by San Jose s 15th game in the 2020-21 NHL season.
Special: Nashville owes Colorado a 2022 2nd round pick once acquired unless Nashville receives a 2021 2nd before the 2021 draft.

This is really important. Actually stop and think, do I have time and do I want to to play this year. Sucks to have a GM quit a few days before the draft forcing the league to manage. Make a deecision now, in or out, you can always come back, if out.

Capitals have sent Dallas a 2021 2nd that fulfills our only remaining condition. No one owes us any picks via conditions for the upcoming draft.

My conditions

Nashville owes CBJ a 2021 st
Columbus owes Nashville a 2021 4th round pick

Agulati - Do you know if the below condition is still valid. It does not have a date attached to it.

Conditional 3rd become Tampa’s choice 2nd if Howard retires

Are we now opening up trading future draft picks early. I’ve noticed that 2023 picks are being allowed. Does this mean once the roll over happens we are now allowed to acquire 2024 picks

If not than at what date is it allowed as we are not using the roll over date anymore?

Yeah Cam is doing the rollover right now, should be done any day. So no sense delaying deals that have been agreed to.
Once the rollover happens 2024 picks cannot be traded. Just 2022 and 2023.

Nice, thanks Cam. You're the best

Next time I know to not wait for the rollover

Yep. The condition is valid. Will be the lowest 2nd that I have currently/closer to the draft. If it is okay, we can consummate the trade closer to the draft.

I'm curious as to how players on the taxi squads will be rated. I am guessing that re-rates take into account play in the AHL. For those in taxi squads, they probably didn't dress for any/many games.

That's an interesting catch. Up till now, I was pretty excited about a lot of the junior players getting in enough games to get ratings, A lot of depth NHL players are not rated much better than AHL ones.... so filling out the 4th line this year will be a lot of fun

I doubt the rating packages will take into account taxi squads at all.

Yes. Anytime including draft day is good.

I have two conditions to meet:

1) Top 20 pick in 2021 draft to Devils - I am chatting with 3thirty now
2) 2nd rnd Pick in 21' draft to Avs - Flames owes me a 2nd round pick in 21' draft so once I get I will send along to the Avs

The Hart deal done last summer had a condition that I likely wouldn't do again...so much uncertainty. Luckily neither of us owed a pick so that helped.

These conditions are AWESOME. And after all that, neither of them triggered anything.

Special: If 1st (CHI) 21 is Top 10, Wild send 21 2nd. If Top 5, Wild additonal 21 2nd. If 1st (CHI) 21 is Bottom 10, Ducks send 21 2nd. If Bottom 5, Ducks additional 21 2nd. If 1st CHI is traded all conditions void

Special: Pick 34 from Cgy to Min. If Tor 1 2021 is top 7 (Min sends a 2nd to Cgy), bottom 7 (2nd to MIN), if traded then condition void
