There was a compulsory dance for a while back in the days of Original Set Pattern, kind of like how men's and women's had figures judged before the short

No I thought ice dance did 3 skates. Short, free and long. I am getting old so I might be crazy. "A place for Mom" is getting closer.

It was changed after 2010. There used to be a Compulsory Dance, an Original Dance, and the Free Dance. Starting in 2011, the first two were combined into the short dance. There are certain compulsory elements that must be completed during the short dance, but it allows them to incorporate them into a more entertaining performance.

0-0 USA vs Slovakia after 1 period. In case anyone is wondering. I want to watch but I just can’t turn away from ice dance.

They used to do "figures" in the individual figure skating too. Not televised. Performers would compete in their training clothes and judges stood on the ice watching them.
Not exactly made for TV.

I was watching a video the other day about the Battle of the Brians from 1988 and there were clips of Orser and Boitano doing their compulsory figures at the Corral. It was pretty much a waste of everyone's time.

NBC team also said the French team have the 5 highest free dance scores ever recorded. Didn't realize that. Even with the lead, Canadians underdog here.
