Indeed. But I can see the logic in it: the Flames have their NHL lineup set, and are still evaluating their AHL goalies. Gillies clearly needs to show more; this is his chance.

This is true and I do believe Gillies is on a one way contract as well just to make things a bit more interesting. This is almost like a showcase to see if he is, at the very least, a tradable asset.

#Flames Bill Peters just told us that experimenting with Elias Lindholm at centre is probably not going to happen in pre-season. Expect him to stay on right wing with Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau.

Rittich gets the start in net tonight. He’ll play at least 30 minutes and they’ll evaluate from there based on workload.

It's time to see exactly how amazing the Oilers other #1 centre is.
Here's a fun bit of information I gleaned from the other board:
Anton Burdasov is a 28-year-old Russian (6'2" 227 lbs) who scored 19 goals and 12 assists in 50 GP in the KHL last season. The Oilers have brought him over on a PTO, and here is what fans are saying about him...
Spoiler!

"Wicked wrist shot. Big body. Seems to have an edge to his game.
This could be interesting."
Quote:
"Looks like a Russian Neal."
Quote:
"Given a little more time and space to get that shot off....I think he should get an opportunity on the PP too.
Nobody on the team has a wrist shot like that."
Quote:
"I could see Burdasov playing on a 3rd line and also getting some 2nd line time as well."
Quote:
"Its a clever way to compensate for a lack of true top 6 wingers.
This could work."
Quote:
"Maybe he will be McDavids winger with Draisaitl."
Quote:
"Listening to Stauffer... he said that Scrivens said that Burdasov has got close to a top 10 shot in the NHL.... and one of the better shots he's ever faced."
Quote:
"As it stands right now (again based on video evidence only) he has the best shot on this team."
Quote:
"I have a good feeling about Burdasov, won't be surprised if he gets some playing time on the top line, he likely will be on the PP with that accurate shot of his, based on the reviews so far."
Quote:
"currently the KHL NHLE is ~.7 so if you take Burdasov's last 3 season total 51 goals in 126 games... that's .405 goals per game... which is the equivalent to about .283 at the NHL level... so over a full 82 game season you could theoretically expect Burdasov to score ~23 goals at the NHL level.
If you can pick up a 23 goal scorer in the NHL for "free" on what's probably going to be close to a minimum level contract... you do that anytime."
Quote:
"He's a guy that's now 28 which basically means he's been developing and improving his game for years in the KHL... and now he's basically in his prime years for a forward... mid to late 20's... so the advantage of picking up a player at that age is that you've basically had another team do all the development work and they walk on as essentially a finished product and you get them at their maximum potential."
The pre-season hype-train has hit full speed. Is there another NHL fan base that does this? Oilers fans are ridiculous.
