IIRC this was mentioned in previous posts but it is only the comfort camping that is closing. The park itself and main campground are staying open.

Someone on twitter did just that.

Stars = proposed park changes; shaded areas = coal restrictions being lifted

To be fair, wouldn't there be a concentration of campgrounds in the areas where coal is found.... that's the best area for campgrounds.

Probably has nothing to do with the fact the coal industry was lobbying the provincial government too, right?

You would need to specifically map the acerage that was removed from protection against that map.

Closing campgrounds is not the same as closing protected zones. The UCP did both. So showing a tweet with the two maps overplayed and alluding the the campground closures and zones were part of opening up more land for coal development is misleading.

The UCP might very well be doing what is alleged by that tweet. The tweet just doesn’t show it.

If they had consulted the public before ramming these changes through under cover of COVID-19 maybe people would have given them the benefit of the doubt — but how can anybody trust that this isn't EXACTLY what they plan to do when...

a) they said no public land would be sold, then sold grasslands to a party donor
b) they said this was to save money, but the cost-savings turned out to be minimal (plus trail grooming in kananaskis could have changed to a user pay model)
c) they say they want to double tourism, but then shutter visitor centres and campgrounds
d) their implementation of key election promises has been met with scandal (see oil & gas war room)
e) they've regularly been criticized for cronyism, back-room politics, and being in the pocket of business
