Made a pair of these shelving units. Solid Walnut legs and Walnut ply shelves (with solid edge banding). Just need to apply a finish.
The new Festool Domino got a mighty workout on this project.

I figured I needed make something METAL, so I dove into my CD collection and was inspired to do this - a re-creation of the cover of Holy Diver by Dio!
It's made of the usual materials - Sculpey, wire, foil and Celluclay - with the addition of decorative glass and some chain I liberated way back from the lost and found at my old job. I also decided to light it up, so a string of LED lights from Dollarama were added to the base. It looks positively EVIL in the dark!

It seems like a game changer - even for the amateurs. I toyed with the notion of doing the project using a dowel jig. It wasn't long before I was at Woodcraft buying the Domino.

The Festool line is amazing stuff, but its almost comically expensive.
Every once in awhile, I think oh well I'll just treat myself to something nice, I wonder what Festool has these days.......nope.
As a hobby DIY'er its just so out of range.
Not judging, just jealous.

The precision of the festool stuff is a game changer. Yes it’s spendy but IMHO it is worth every damn nickel.

If you're serious about the hobby/profession for the long-term, and you have the means, might as well buy the quality.
During our office reno, we had a guy come in to do some drywall smoothing/painting a few months ago, and he was using a Festool sander/extractor. Man was that thing impressive....the place was cleaner after he left than how he found it. The guy was like The Wolf with that thing.

I've splurged three times now to get the best tool/upgrade for the job. The Domino, a Lie Nielsen rabbet block plane, and the Byrd Shelix cutterhead for my Dewalt planer. All three were relatively expensive but totally worth it when compared to the level of improvement. Everything else in the tool kit is run of the mill brands.

I make things of a different sort. I have many great memories of spending hours with my grandmother making and baking. When I got sick, I took up a lot of those crafts again. These are some of my previous projects.
One of my current projects is cross-stitching the Flames 40th banner for friends who live overseas.

It's been a while since I built an actual model, so I had to make sure to do a good job of it. Just finished this AT-AT with snowspeeders for all you Star Wars fans!
It's an old MPC model that I bought at a meet last year - it's an oldie but definitely a goodie! I had to get creative with the base since I'm running low on a few materials. It's painted foil on top of a chunk of styrofoam, and covered with a LOT of white craft sand and a bunch of table salt which are held together with about two cups of white glue. The black rock is leftover celluclay from my Dio project. I'm pretty pleased with it. Hope you enjoy:

Is that one of the 240V personal sized home CNC machines? I'd love to pick your brain about one.
I've been waffling for a few years on the idea of getting one, what are some things to look for (ideally I'd like to be able to do both thin gauge metal and wood).
And how user friendly is the program? I'm modestly good with autocad (goes back a few years now to my schooling) but is it a step learning curve?

The CNC belongs to my dad, and he set it all up, so unfortunately I can’t help you out with most of those questions.
It’s not a personal sized machine, my dad’s can do 4’x4’
He does all his drawing in Fusion 360. It wasn’t all that easy to setup, but a newer machine might be easier.
He has done wood, plastic and aluminum on it.

not sure if this is the best place to put this... but whatever.
our little guy turns 5 tomorrow so i asked him what kind of cake he wanted. he didn't really give any ideas except that he wanted it to have green and blue icing and include marshmallows (he originally asked for a red cake (flames red to be more specific), but white icing + red food colouring usually results in pink, which was a big nope! ha! ha!)
hmmmmm... ok.... i didn't really know what i was going to do until my wife brought in a 2-pack of hotwheels monster trucks (he is sooo into monster trucks right now).
so this is what i came up with....
