Looks like the coaches want 4f 1d PP setup

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
#Flames powerplay units looking like this:

Tkachuk
Quine-Monahan-Lindholm
Gustafsson

Ruzicka
Gawdin-Backlund-Phillips
Giordano

Some definite extrapolation needed with two practice groups. Most interesting is seeing both units with 4F, 1D.

My guess would be

Quine = Gaudreau
Ruzicka = Lucic
Gawdin/Phillips= Mangiapane/Dube

Man, this feels nice to see though (camp/practice notes).

I just had two teeth pulled today, and yet this makes it all feel better. That and the Tylenol 3

I would say that the split must be based off of when people returned/ potentially the tail end of quarantining? But that doesnt make sense as at least one of the players (Hanifin) has already been out on ice with players in the 1st group previously.

Anyone have any reads on the reason for the odd groupings?

#Flames not skating in first on-ice session (second session scheduled for 12:15 p.m.):

Cam Talbot

Rasmus Andersson
Noah Hanifin

Johnny Gaudreau
Milan Lucic
Dillon Dube
Zac Rinaldo
Buddy Robinson
Mark Jankowski
Andrew Mangiapane
Sam Bennett

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
#Flames lines at their first practice look like:

Quine-Monahan-Lindholm
Tkachuk-Backlund-Rieder
Ruzicka-Ryan-Czarnik
Froese-Gawdin-Phillips

D-men are Giordano, Mackey, Brodie, Valimaki, Forbort, Stone, Yelesin, Gustafsson, Kylington

Rittich, Gillies, Zagidulin in net.

The Jets are not running an open camp like the Flames seem to be doing on day 1.

their second group was

Connor-Scheifele-Wheeler
Ehlers-Eakin-Laine
Copp-Lowry-Roslovic

Morrissey-DeMelo
Kulikov-Pionk
Sbisa

Which will account for 90+% of their TOI in game 1.

Flames are running a more traditional opening day of camp looking to give some guys who would be only dressed in a major emergency some ice time with the big guys.

18 days to puck drop. Wonder how long the Flames try to make it interesting and when they focus on the guys that need to mesh get repetitions together?

This is awesome to see, hopefully these 2nd power-play roles continue for the youngsters when they do earn their opportunity to suit up for the Flames. Goals would not be hard to come by...

Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Backlund - Ruzicka
Mangiapane - Ryan - Dubé
Lucic - Gawdin - Phillips

This is pretty standard fare for training camps, no? I think it mostly has to do with how the coaches run a camp, and this looks pretty much like a September rotation to me.

Loubardias said that Tkachuk was the top forward in Group 1.

Dube and Robinson not in group 2. The only players to not skate today.

Let the speculation begin on Robinson and Dube.

Calgary Flames @NHLFlames
#Flames Phase 3 Training Camp Update: Buddy Robinson and Dillon Dube are unable to participate today.

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
#Flames looking like this in their second practice group today:

Gaudreau-Jankowski-Mangiapane
Lucic-Bennett-Rinaldo

Hanifin-Andersson

Talbot

If you're gearing up for playoffs where the reffing is different I see that Bennett line as the 4th line. Replace Rinaldo with whoever but Id roll with Bennett and Lucic to punish ppl.

It's pretty insane how competitive professional athletes are:

Gio and Tkachuk are lined up at centre by the boards for a 1v1 drill. The drill is a race to the puck that's within stick length to both players. If Gio gets it, he'll defend against a forechecking Tkachuk. If Tkachuk gets it, Gio will defend the zone.

So one of the coaches is still getting set up for the drill, but Gio and Tkachuk are already lined up, both in a ready stance. Tkachuk keeps tapping the puck closer to him. Gio pushes the puck back in between them. This happens a good 5-6 times.

They weren't smiling or joking around either.

I hope they really untilize Gustafsson on PP 1. He’s dynamic and getting some practice in I can see him being very important in the playoffs.

Damn... Dube is a huge x-factor as far as the flames forwards go in this tournament, at least in my opinion. He's got the skillset that leads to the largest "Roster mobility" (ie. depth player that could play all the way up to top line). Hopefully, he's ready by the time Aug 1st rolls around!

Well that sounds ominous.

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
#Flames head coach Geoff Ward on why there was an uneven split in his two practice groups today:

“Circumstances that became apparent last week” made it so they had to be as such. Says he can’t elaborate beyond that.

Pat Steinberg
@Fan960Steinberg
Ward says his groupings will probably change on a daily basis, based on circumstances.

Says as long as players are getting work in, he’s not as worried with who they’re playing with. #Flames

Were second group players practicing with Dube and Robinson in Phase 2? If either or both of them have tested positive, that might be the reason for the groups to be separated as such

This is going to be a #### show and annoying to follow.

Just wait until star players are "unable to participate in pivotal game 5"

don't know about Robinson but Dube was practicing with the other Calgary based players (Phillips, Stone, Giordano) since the start of phase 2.
