Is there a period of time after signing a UFA that you cannot trade them? IIRC for summer UFA's it's Dec. 1 or Jan. 1? Would there be a similar delay here?

Seems odd to even have a two-way as part of the deal.
Regardless, if he went on waivers another team would probably give him a try for $700,000.

I'm not aware of any lockout period of time for trading UFAs.
There was this rule in the CBA during the 2003/2004 season:
Quote:
"The player technically was not eligible to return to Calgary," Bill Daly, NHL executive vice-president and chief legal officer, said in a statement Friday. "The Flames traded McAmmond to Colorado on Oct. 1, 2002, three days prior to the NHL waiver draft, and Article 13.36 of the collective bargaining agreement states explicitly that 'a player traded by a club within the four weeks prior to the waiver draft may not be re-acquired by such club within the forthcoming season.'

Disagree. He lit us the F up when we played the kings this year, and he looked great his first game in Montreal last night (came out with an assist.)
I think he was just on a terrible club and motivation has always been somewhat of an issue with him. In the right scenario I think he will be valuable (especially at 750k.)

Im sure his plan is to get the top line minutes and hopefully become more desirable to the contenders come the deadline. His effort last night looked good, although not likely to continue at 6 hits a game.

Kovy looked decent in last night's Habs game. Threw a few big hits and got an assist.

Sounds like Bennett. I wonder if Habs fans hate him already.

Except Benny doesn't even get assists. He gets penalties.

if he took 2 bad penalties, one in the deep offensive zone, then maybe they would be unhappy.

Did Kovalchuk attempt to get by 2 defenders using a toe drag?
I kid, I kid.
But seriously did he?

Kovalchuk can start a toe drag from the defensive blue line and gain the zone to get that assist. He has incredible potential and yet the weirdest career trajectory in the history of hockey. What a strange dude.

Kovalchuk is Chuck Norris on skates. He can score two goals with one puck.
Kovalchuk can hit the light switch with his wrist shot and be under the blanket before the lights turned off.
I also heard he doesn't have a Ctrl key on his computer because he's always in control.

Would have been a nice signing for the Flames. However, no way Tre would take the risk after the Jagr debacle. Too risky for Tre.

Tbh, what substantial, long-term negative consequences really came from the Jagr signing? It's not like he was bought out. He played a quarter of the year, did okay, got hurt, and decided he wanted to go back home. There wasn't any cap recapture or anything and I'd be willing to bet his presence was beneficial for the development of Tkachuk and Bennett.

At $700k, there can't be too much risk, but I don't see Kovy being an answer for either the Flames or Habs. He is motivated now, but what if he gets benched or the team loses a bunch. I think it highly likely that he becomes a negative distraction.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

I think one game from Kovy after finally getting to play isn't enough to get excited about. He got 6 points his first week, and then shut down.

I answered my own question. Due to him being 35+ they have that in there to protect themselves so if it doesn't work out and he goes home, they can bury him first before releasing him.
