Default Torts fined $20,000 for exposing officials.

What a joke this league is sometimes. Good for him for exposing these guys.

20K is a hefty fine (couple weeks salary or so), but he is really fortunate he wasn't suspended.

Take the officials to task all you want, but don't do it publically. That stuff should be kept between the league and the club.

He won't be receiving any favors from the stripes for a long while Im guessing.

We know the Flames have taken officiating up with league and not through the media and what good did it do? There is a very very large problem with the officiating in this league, maybe more coaches and players need to be vocal for a change to happen.

This is an interesting part of the penalty, too.

Wow. Torts should just pay the extra 25k now and be done with it

I'm still pretty annoyed at the league's response. That snake Colin Campbell releases a statement immediately condemning torts but as far as I'm concerned nobody from the league has commented on the incident itself.

I love Torts for this. Fans know it's a problem with the league, but seeing everyone from players, execs, coaches, and even the media simply ignore it and pretend it doesn't exist because they don't want to be blackballed is disgusting to me. It's killing my interest in the NHL

They did, but it was Campbell and predictably BS

Campbell said in a statement that it was a judgment call by the referee, who checked with the clock operator before denying the Blue Jacket’s request to restore the time. He said NHL operations didn’t see the need to get involved.

My guess is this has been tried again and again and Torts is pretty fed up with zero action on referee accountability (like most people who watch the game are). People don't just do something like this out of nowhere. And Torts may be a bit of a loose cannon, but he's far from dumb.

This.

The NHL is just terrible about transparency. It's one thing to support on-ice officials. It's quite another to have absolutely no accountability as regards calls or as regards consistency. It's pathetic.

I have to disagree here actually. The NHL has coddled the refs too much, and it's given the impression that errors from the refs aren't faced with displicine, or publicly admit an error was made.

The NHL acts like it's refs are perfect, and never make bad calls (or non calls) that can alter the game. It's built up a lot of resentment for the officials in the fans eyes since there's never any acknowledgement of a screw up.

The only recent act of this that I can recall is the Sharks/Knights Game 7 this past playoffs, where a major penalty was called for something that arguably wasn't even a penalty at all, and the Sharks in the final minutes were able to pull off a several goal comeback, and then ultimately win the game and the series. That was a mistake the NHL couldn't hide from, and changed the rules where major penalties have to be reviewed before enforcing them.

I would like it if the players, coaches, and even GM's were more vocal about terrible calls or mistakes made from the refs in public, so then the refs and the league itself could be held more accountable. It leaves a very sour taste in your mouth when a mistake from the refs in a crucial moment results in your team losing the game as a result, and there's no acknowledgment of it.

So, if Torts hadn’t asked for a review of the time, everything would have occurred differently and his goalie wouldn’t have been injured.

One thing is clear, if the extra time was put on the clock, it again would have meant things would have occurred differently.

That isn't the point. The point is the officials botched it and the league did their typical nothing to see here. This is an ongoing problem and a big one. There is zero accountability and teams are losing games and even series over poor officiating. Every fan of every team is tired of it. A man just got a $20,000 for what? Pointing out the officials yet again botched things up?

I sure enjoy the reffing in the world juniors. Your team just took a 5 minute penalty and you slash someone? Guess what, you get another 2 min. Call the rules by the book and enough with this game management bs.

It was the exact point that Torts was making.

That the failure to add a second onto the clock directly resulted in the injury, when it had nothing to do with it.

I like the shake of the Timmy's cup on the podium. They have Tim's in Columbus?
