lanny Matt Stajan settles in Calgary, retirement next?

Sorta got lost in all the big hoopla today....

Doesn't sound like he'll be playing overseas again, and in all likelihood is ending his playing career pending an official retirement.

He was helping run drills at the recent Flames development camp, so maybe that's a hint to his next career. He is still highly regarded by most in the organization.

Stajan is already retired. He retired from hockey in May after Red Bull Munchen got knocked out of the DEL championship final (their version of the Stanley Cup).

There's a process to officially retire from the NHL for pension purposes. A mere formality in Stajan's case, but still unofficial nonetheless.

I got the the impression from media reports and such that a lot of the younger Flames revered Stajan, that imparted a great deal of wisdom on how to be a pro. I think he'd be well-suited to a developmental or associate coach role.

Matt Stajan was a player I grew to love overtime, as I admit I wasn't a fan for the longest time. He also scored that huge goal for us against Vancouver I remember.

Welcome home Matt!!!

This is a guy - much like Conroy, Gelinas, and McGrattan - that I would absolutely love to see come back in an operations or player development role. He really won me over with his professionalism and compete level during his second contract with us.

It's a testament to the city and the organisation that guys who aren't Calgarians choose to settle there after they hang up the skates. Great to have ragin' Stajan around the team still.

Is it me or does it seem crazy that Munich only has two arenas of any sort in the entire city?

They're apparently building a new one for the Red Bull hockey team and the basketball team. Almost doubling the capacity of their current building.

Pretty swanky from the renders. Love how it blends into the natural landscape.

I still get choked up when I see his shootout goal against the Coilers and he points up to the sky. Damn onions. Best of luck, Staj!

Wrong thread for this, but why not...

The outside design is excellent. Is see no reason why we couldn't convert something like into a cowboy hat shape.

I like the green roof concept too. But I'd love to see some sheets of ice on the top of ours. Our why not something like restaurants or outdoor event spaces? Another stage for outdoor entertainment? Even the ability to broadcast events outdoor from the roof would be cool. I would think this is technically.

You'll rarely see vision in North America, unfortunately. Just pure revenue maximizing, nothing more. You'll see whatever a group can muster on the outside to make it look "cool" without costing too much more than a standard bland design, but nothing special.

So...we invest in sending Matt Stajan to a Munich University to study architecture and then commission him to design our new stadium.

Sold! Get 'er done!

Without question one of the best moments in flames history.

I never understood the love with Stajan on CP. In eight full seasons, he averaged 7 goals/year. He made more than $3 million most of those years.

When they talked about the lack of production from the Flames bottom 6, they were talking about Stajan.

However, he was/is absolutely beloved on CP.

The biggest piece in the infamous Phaneuf trade...

Basically, a 3rd/4th line C that everyone hoped would be more a 2nd/3rd line C, which never ever was the case.

That being said, dude was a pure pro, humble, and someone any person who has had to live thru tragedy can relate to.

I was a vocal hater of Stajan for a long time, but even i look back and consider Stajan as a Flame a good thing that happened to the flames and to the city of Calgary.
