loved Mel Bridgman ... Marcus Nilson played a solid secondary role for the team in the '04 drive, Dennis Wideman was controverseial but a top four defenseman for years.
But tenure and production mean this has to be Robert Reichel.
Didn't love the player, but he did more with #26 than any one else.

I believe the correct answer is Robert Reichel and I'm fine with that, he was part of an era that under-delivered but he had many good seasons, a nice home grown player
this is one time I just went off script and voted for all old favourite- Steve Bozek. did play 5 years here and he was always noticeable for me out there. one of those guys (Prust/Jokinen/Tanguay etc later) who was traded /acquired back and forth from the Flames multiples times in deals involving some big name Flames
Bridgman clearly also deserves mention (and likely placement ahead of Bozek)
Nilson's time here was short and sweet
I think of 28 for Ranheim? (he won't win there either obviously)

Yeah, it looks like he only wore #26 for 5 games in 1988-89. He switched to #28 when he became a full-time NHLer the following year.
Also, Wideman only wore #26 for his first (lockout shortened) season in Calgary. He switched to #6 after Sarich was traded.

Yeah I'd still pick Reichel but I should have had Bozek in the good choice list above. Oversight.

The thing that I always remember about Bozek is the trades he was a part of... Sent to St Louis in the Hull trade, then sent back to Calgary in the Gilmour trade, then sent to Vancouver along with Reinhart.
All three trades over a period of 6 months.

Bridgman had a couple of relatively strong years in the early 80s, but short tenure.
Bozek was a strong two-way player who could add some offensive pop. Plenty of tenure in the 80s. Not overly memorable, but a good player none the less.
I could say the exact same thing about Ranheim as I did about Bozek. Strong two-way player with some offense. Good secondary player for many years. I distinctly remember his excellent speed. However, Ranheim played the majority of his time in Calgary under 28, and only played under 26 for 5 games, so he's disqualified from this vote.
Reichel played 6 years in Calgary and had two excellent years in the early 90s, reaching the 40 goal mark in both years, and several other very strong years offensively. He was a little disappointing in clutch time, but he was still a very good player overall. He had a pretty productive career over 13 seasons.
Begin was with the organization for a while, but always as a bit player or 4th liner at best.
Nilson had 4 solid years in Calgary as a bottom 6 player, but people will only remember his value in the '04 playoff run which makes them think he's better than he was. Nice solid defensive player, but had very little offensive value. Hard worker, but nothing exceptional to warrant a vote.
Kotalik........ugh........well past his "best before" date when he joined the Flames. Next.
Wideman played all but one season under 6, not 26. Therefore disqualified from this vote.
Wotherspoon never stuck in the NHL.
Stone was okay as a bottom pairing defenseman to start, but his game has quickly diminished and is now on the verge of being out of the league. Hard battler though.
For me, I have to go with Reichel. I always wanted a little more out of him, but nobody could deny his talent and contributions offensively. Close second to Bozek.

Bob Reichel was a maddening player, but as a kid, he was one of my favorites.

I remember how many times Reichel seemed to miss the net. Good player but didn't seem to have the drive to be a really great player.

Yep, Reichel was great player during the regular season, but always whiffed in those crucial make or break moments. If you wanted a guy to hit the post or miss the wide open net in OT, he was your man.

Not based on anything other than a good feeling - I liked Bozek most from that group.

I voted Reichel, but my heart said Bozek - an Oiler killer, and IIRC he scored a short-handed goal on them when the Flames were killing a 5 on 3. I still believe the reason the Flames lost the '88 series with the Oilers was because he was a huge part of the Flames' success in checking the Oilers top lines and the Flames lost that checking advantage when he was part of the Brett Hull trade.

Reichel was super-skilled.
He could've ended the 94 series vs. the Canucks in game 7 OT before Bure's dagger. Perfect pass from a 3 on 1 that he couldn't elevate close in.

What always pissed me off was that he always choked in the big moments for the Flames, but seemed to be able to do it on the international stage for his country.
He was one of my favorite Flames at the time, but extremely frustrating.

Most of these guys were behind my time and I'm sure they're better choices, but I threw a vote Michael Stone's way just because he was such a breath of fresh air in 2016-17.
When Stone was acquired, that was the first time I felt the Flames had a complete defensive group in years.
