Default Seton YMCA

The Seton YMCA opened on Monday. I went for one of the tours before it opened, and wow, it was impressive! Has anyone else been to it yet? The public art work that features sculptures of various species of birds flying together to build a large, single nest is amazing.

Heard you have to pay for parking there, that equals a hard no for me.

It’s on a time system I think. Anything less that 3 hours or so and you don’t pay.

Repsol Center should do something like that. Their lot is full of downtown parkers.

The surf simulators are fun. They used to have one in Kelowna at the H2O Centre - I think they closed it though, not sure if it was a safety thing. I thought it was awesome. Hopefully the one at Seton doesn't get shut down.

Repsol Centre is planning to do a massive expansion soon. I don't see the parking situation improving with that though, lol.

2 1/2 hours is what the sign says starting Feb 1.

On another note, a Esso Minor Hockey Week game was cancelled last night, as they had Zamboni issues and destroyed the ice.

I'm enjoying it. I've been to the gym there everyday, so far, this week. I used to go use the Quarry Park location but since we're in McKenzie Lake, I appreciate going against traffic (in the morning) to get there.

Lots of equipment, 200m track for runners, three big courts for basketball, etc. I've been surprised at the number of people utilizing it already - was expecting it to be a little slow to start but I haven't had any difficulty accessing the equipment I wanted during my workouts. I would say it is comparable to the Quarry Park location as far as the ratio between people and equipment (which I find is very good).
Looking forward to the 50m pool when it opens March 1st. And the Flow Rider!

Can confirm the parking fees (staring Feb 1.); only required for stays > 2.5 hours. My guess is they have this requirement to keep the students of the neighbouring high school from using the lot. There is free street parking, if necessary.

I toured it back in November - amazing building.

Please no more competition for street parking - it’s already hard enough when I drive down for my site visits.

Could be that, too, but you'd be better off parking near the stores if you want a shorter walk.

Btw, at 330,000 sq. ft., they are touting this as the largest YMCA in the world.

Sorry my point was if the YMCA was free parking you might get people parking there to go to the hospital so they could avoid paying for parking at the hospital.

A good book that everyone should read is the high cost of free parking.

Essentially free parking isn’t free it is baked into the cost of everything we purchase. It is a tax paid for by everyone regardless if they use the service. This subsidy of the car has a whole bunch of knock on affects that make transportation in general less efficient.

Maybe people shouldn't have to pay to park at a f'n hospital... I get it at somewhere like the Chumir, but when the hospital is in the middle of nowhere, is it really that big a deal?

So pay parking makes things cheaper?

Anyway, with respect to UCB’s post, I don’t think the hospital is actually close enough for people to want to use the Y parking lot just to hoof it over there. Maybe it is.

For all the critiques I hear of the Canadian Medial system this is probably the worst part of it.

My son needs a couple stitches, OK his fault. I need to wait a couple hours for a doctor whatever they're doing triage. But them charging me $20 to park in a half empty lot that pisses me off.
