Yeah it's obviously a "wink wink" deal with the real contract announced Jan 1 with a juicy signing bonus to make up for this.

hossa was coming off of 15 years as being a pro.... taking a salary "hit" at that point is his career to chase a Cup is a much, much difference thing than labanc coming off of he ELC and earning substantially lower than what his metrics suggest what he ought to be earning based on the market as exists now...

for his sake, he and his agent better hope this season was a trend an not an aberration; Ferland probably could have earned much more than 3.5 AAV if he extended prior to his falloff...

The Sharks are just bizarre.

26.5 million tied up in top 3 D Karlsson / Burns / Vlasic ... through 2025! (when Burns is 40)

* Compare to Calgary- the entire Flames blueline (including all 8 - Gio, Brodie, Hamonic, Hanifin, Andersson, Valimaki, Stone and Kylington) who come in at under 26.1 next year

Another 15 million tied up in Couture and Kane also until 2025.

That’s your core. I’m not too worried about them as a team.

Timo Meier at age 22 puts up 30 goals 66 points in 78 games and gets $6 million x 4.

Oh yeah, put down Martin Jones for $5.75 through 2024.

That leaves about $28 million to spread over, what, 15 other guys? Better get a lot of value out of those deals!

(And Hertl eats $5.6 of that $28 for the next 3 years).

Labanc at 23 gets 17 goals 56 points and gets $1 M x 1. Good value.

Still bizarre. What a mess they have!

Makes you appreciate Treliving for sure.

Long term the Sharks are ####ed, no question.

However, I think it's a pretty safe bet that they are still top 3 in the Pacific this year.

I don't know... Losing Pavelski is losing like 30 goals and 60, 70 points per year. Meier might be able to take that responsibility and Kane with a little bit of that slack but they lost their captain. What are they gonna do? Give it back to Thornton?

I think the team chemistry is going to drop significantly over there.

Not discounting Pavelski who is very good, but you don't lose 30 goals. Someone else will get that premium ice time, including PP time, so those lost 30 goals will get discounted to some degree.

Yes but they also lost their captain since 2015 and his leadership intangibles as he was one of the longest tenured players with the organization. I'm not saying they will fall off a cliff and miss the playoffs but they will be a different team without him.

I'm guessing perhaps some people are getting confused with Paul Kariya who signed with Colorado for $1.2M to chase the Stanley Cup with Selanne.
