Might not be a good apples to apples comparison we are seeing if people are only disclosing the dollar amount of their total utility bill and not the actual energy usage which really is the only thing that matters to see if your consumption went up or not. Then after that we can begin examining the other various fees etc. Enmax may or may not include gas or even electricity depending on if they are your provider, and they will be including a bunch of other water related items regardless since they collect on behalf of the City of Calgary I think. So even your total Enmax bill is broken up into a bunch of different groupings.

Our bill was $700 for January, we just moved into the place so not sure if that's highly abnormal. Assumed it would be about $500 when we did the move finances.

My house consistently beats "efficient homes" in the EngeryIQ section of the Enmax portal and similar homes. My bill is still ginormous.

My January bill was:
Electricity: 514kWh = $67.20. Similar homes, 934kWh
Gas: 13GJ = $140.46. Similar homes, 15GJ

Along with all my other services, the bill was $318. My carbon tax was $10.

My 2nd highest bill before that (December) was $267 and I would say December was just as cold.

Despite being extremely efficient with my usage compared to similar homes, my bill is still huge. I can't believe how big some of the bills would be for some of my neighbors. Can't we fight back as consumers?

You can always go off the grid. Teach those utility companies a lesson!

Our utility bill went up $50 from the previous month but our consumption during this December to January cycle was in line with that from the same time period in previous years. It was clearly colder this year, which resulted in the higher natural gas consumption. We also have three portable electric area heaters around the house and I noticed we turned them on more often during this particular December/January. I personally did not see any discrepancies in my Enmax bill.

Dec-Jan 2014/15
  • Avg. NG consumption per day = 0.54 GJ; Avg. NG Price per GJ = $3.20
  • Avg. Electricity Use Per Day = 22.1 kWh; Avg. price for each kWh = 7.3 cents
  • Total Utility Bill = $355.28

Dec-Jan 2015/16
  • Avg. NG consumption per day = 0.50 GJ; Avg. NG Price per GJ = $2.14
  • Avg. Electricity Use Per Day = 21.6 kWh; Avg. price for each kWh = 5.2 cents
  • Total Utility Bill = $311.13

Dec-Jan 2016/17
  • Avg. NG consumption per day = 0.61 GJ; Avg. NG Price per GJ = $3.29
  • Avg. Electricity Use Per Day = 23.8 kWh; Avg. price for each kWh = 4.2 cents
  • Total Utility Bill = $345.41

My bill from December was $267, and the January bill was $318. My usage definitely didn't go up. It was simply an increase in pricing plus the carbon tax. I can "handle" the increases, but the blatant wealth redistribution tax really pisses me off. Plus, I know there are tons of Calgarians out there that are struggling and every increase hurts.

My total bill (electricity, water, waster, recycling) went up $90. But the usage spiked hard for natural gas from 3.86 to 11.68 GJ. The natural gas portion went from $58 to $120.

Would be interesting to know usage versus an actual meter reading and subsequent adjustment. I.e. they guesstimate December, do a reading in January and there is an adjustment, that effects billing.

Which leads me to another thing on the Carbon tax, if the government was really interested in curbing peoples use of energy, then wouldn't it be ideal to implement a real time app/phone so you can see what your bill is any given day to curb consumption realtime?

My bill has been up quite a bit the last 2 months. Just paid my bill today ($350). usually floats in the $250-$300 range for this time of year.

From the article:

"We can be impacted by things like weather and holidays. There's also a recent retroactively approved increase to the electricity admin charges by the Alberta Utilities Commission. "

Retroactive increase? What the heck is this!

Sooooo Enmax sent me a cheque after they came checked my meter which is inside for the first time in about two years.

Then they stopped the payment. I called in and asked why and they said because they sent the cheque by mistake and someone else had paid my bill by mistake and the refund was meant for them....even though it was under my name and coincidentally a week after they came and checked my meter finally. Something seem fishy? I know enmax isn't the greatest company but no reason not to believe them right? I've also never had an extra $600 credit in my account.
