Clearing that cap for John Tavares.
This is a creative bit of work. Yzerman and Wilson seem to be the most creative GMs out there.

Don't know how he fleeced Ottawa here. They got a really good young D man and a solid iddle six winger for a middle six winger with some cancerous (To OTTAWA only) issues behind the curtain.
Addition by subtraction and then they got something to replace hoffman with.

Also, for the Senators.. maybe there is a connection between Boedker and Turris... hoping for some chemistry
edit - Turris now plays for Nashville. Ooops

Just so I am clear:
Sharks cleared cap space
Got rid of a problem contract (albeit not a horrible contract)
Gained picks
Nice move.

This is a big year for San Jose. They can maybe squeeze one more year out of Thornton, and this is probably a good year to re-sign Hertl because he had an off-year. But after this year it's the last ELC year for Meier and a bunch of others (but mainly Meier). They will also have to re-sign Couture, Pavelski, Donskoi.
Burns is 33, Vlasic is 31, Braun is 31. Thornton is 38, Joe P is 33, Couture is 29, Hoffman is 28, Kane is 26. Their core is pretty old. Not too old to compete next year, but they don't have a lot of time to win any more.
ETA: wow, never mind

Uh okay, so my earlier post is already obsolete ten minutes later. Well, they're back in the Karlsson sweepstakes. Actually, they might be front runners now - they solved the Hoffman problem for Dorion, and they're already talking, and they have the cap space, so...

Dumped Boedker and a pick for a bunch of cap room and 4 picks.
Well played.

Tavares wouldn't sign to go to a contending team in California? I bet he even leave money on the table to do that.

This is why I think tavares won't end up there. Kovulchuk and Neal on the other hand make a lot of sense. Maybe even Carlson.

TRADE: The #FlaPanthers have acquired forward Mike Hoffman and a 2018 7th round pick from the @SanJoseSharks.
EDIT: And its for picks. Florida's 2019 second round pick, 2018 fourth round pick and 2018 5th round pick.
I think SJ did Ottawa a solid here.
|
Wow, ok then.
Makes sense for the Sharks. They don't have a 1st round pick in 2019 and generally have a weak prospect pool and an aging team (see my post earlier in this thread). I would also worry about having two player's with drama surrounding them on the same team, so flipping Hoffman makes a LOT more sense.
This is just ok for the Panthers as they had some extra picks to give up. The drama of Hoffman will hopefully not disrupt the team, but I am definitely concerned about it. The team needed a strong secondary scoring winger to balance out the offense after both Smith and Marchessault left. Huberdeau and Dadonov became solid contributors last year, but the team struggled after them on the wings. Bjugstad was put on wing just to help, but it didn't fix things enough. Now I could confidently say the Panthers have 2 legitimate scoring lines at least.
Huberdeau-Barkov-Dadonov
Hoffman-Trocheck-Bjugstad/Malgin
I pray to god that Hoffman's situation doesn't distract from this team.

Hopefully the Sharks use that cap space for something other than a big name like Karlason, Carlson or JT. They need centres, give Thornton another huge 1 year deal and sign Tyler Bozak or Riley Nash to something dumb. I just want the Sharks to stop making good moves. Throw Hertl way too much money while you're at it
