It still burns me that Flames were never able to pick up draft capital by taking on a bad contract. Instead, other teams were retaining salary in trades with the Flames.

Call me crazy but i'd take Fleury on a 2 year deal at $3.5M per over a long term big money deal to Markstrom or Holtby.

Especially with a 2nd or possible late 1st thrown in as well.

We almost got a 1st round pick for taking on Cam Ward's contract in Tree's early days, but the deal was never executed.

No, that's Vegas asking a third team to retain 50% of Fleury's contract as an intermediary to broker a deal with someone else - and they're offering that third team a 2nd round pick to retain that 50%, which is a bad deal for that third team (which is why no one has done it). That is NOT Vegas eating 50% of Fleury and packaging in a 2nd round pick for someone else to take Fleury.

And he's 35. I wouldn't count on him to be any more than a backup goaltender at this point in his career. And apparently 3 million for two years seems like too much for a backup goaltender for salary cap starved teams.

Again, for the room.

The team acquiring Fleury would not also get a 2nd. Three way deal:

Vegas trades Fleury to Carolina for a 2nd (no money retained).
Carolina then trades Fleury with 50% retained to the other team.

Fleury won't end up at the team getting the picks, and his salary will not be retained by Vegas, which is why it's a hard deal to complete.

Hopefully Tre is in on something like this. Has to be some middle ground, and potentially some assets to facilitate moving up in the draft while filling a positional need.

Vegas: dumps MAF 100%
Acquiring team: gets MAF at 50%
3rd team: retains 50% of MAF salary and cap hit + gets a 2nd round pick for their troubles


There might be an additional piece going to Vegas and/or the acquiring team.

Vegas is only offering a 2nd round pick for to compensate the 3rd team for losing $7mil in cash, and $3.5 mil in dead cap space for 2 seasons

The potential 3rd teams are saying no we want a 1st and 2nd for retaining Fleury.

No taking Fleury means the Flames have their list prioritized. And it sounded like last night that list had Markstrom and Holtby 1 and 2. I can see Fleury being like 6 or 7 on their list. Behind Talbot too.
