Sharks 3 Flames 1
Sharks 3 Flames 1
- More complete game by the Flames
- Lack of finish does them in
- Powerplay isn't getting it done
- Bottom six still sputtering

Last year the first time the Flames lost the regular season 7-game series was in the middle of February.
They won the first 7 games series 4-3 and the 2nd 7 games series 4-3
This year they are 2-4 with 1 ROW going into game 7.

It's good thing these systems for compartmentalizing the season are not especially meaningful. Yes. The Flames are off to a worse start than last year.

The Flames had a 5-5-1 record on October 27th last year (after the Washington game).
In order to match that start they need to go 3-2-0 in the next five against four non playoff teams and the Capitals.
Kind of a pointless exercise to boil things down to 7 games in my mind. The Flames are off to a below average start with a very low PDO, it will normalize.

I agree, but no one seemed to think it was pointless last year LOL.

Disagree that it is pointless.
The reason it has been discussed is that a Flames coach actually did it. And it worked. It was part of a great achievement / overachievement . I thought it was a great way to take a non playoff team, expected by nobody to be a playoff team, and instill a playoff mindset. If you want to advance in the playoffs, you need to win 4 of 7
It seems like a good device, breaking the season in to chunks ahead of time. Trying to win each 7 game series, you need consistency. Maybe if you drop a couple, the effort picks up in the next five. If a 7 game set is a disaster, you have a clear point to reset.
Obviously coaches have many devices they use, and I have not heard Peters discuss using the 7 game chunks, so it’s not as directly relevant.
But at the time Hartley did it, it was nice to understand how the team was approaching the season, and as a fan being able to look at if the way that you knew they were.
I liked Hartley for a lot of reasons.
- “always earned, never given” - he walked the walk. He had to break a culture of unsuccessful entitled people and did
- sharing stuff like the 7 game segments. It got players and fans engaged
Think about what we see now, Peters saying they need better work ethic. How is he holding the team accountable? He isn’t sharing that

Is that a fact? I don't recall it ever being much of a point of discussion on CP last year.

I don't think I've ever been into the 7 game segment Sutter thing. This year or last, or any year previous

Last season is a perfect example of why the seven game segment approach is flawed. Yes it make have contributed to their consistency throughout the season, but it hadn't instilled enough good habits and mindset to make a difference when it mattered most. I think the theme this year for the top teams will be to improve as the year goes on and peak at the right time.

I think that it really highlighted how consistent last years team was.

Honestly they were consistent as hell in the middle of the season, but had a sketchy start and finish.
But overall sure, not many 107 point teams get there by being inconsistent.
I honestly don't know if they're repeat that 107 point season, my guess has always been they will not, but the six games played this year certainly don't have me all that worried yet. Their defensive numbers are actually the same or better in a lot of cases than last year's start including that gaudy HD against number that they started with last season (down from almost 14/60 minutes to 8 this year) ... their xGF% is considerably better than the actual results, will just need their offence to get rolling.
