Are these "contests" intentionally over subscribed? Has anyone been denied entry if they don't arrive at a certain time before the screening?

It was pretty casual last time I was there - I was there about 25 min early - it pretty well went as smooth as silk

A few years ago I won tickets to a show, showed up 5 minutes before the showing and it was full. They gave me passes to go see that movie once it got released to theatres.
