I knew nothing about him before the draft, and I'm not sure I know anything about him afterwards. I took a look at his highlights on YouTube, and it looks like he is quite agile, and knows where to be, when to be there, and how to get there. He also looks like he knows where his team mates are a lot of the time. Doesn't look like he has a high top speed, but he's got a quick first few steps. His shot isn't a rocket by any imagination, but it's accurate. And he battles well, despite being small.
I'm not overjoyed by the pick, but I'm not mad about it either. Trust in Tre.

i think the "selfish with the puck" could be read as something he needs to work on as being more selfish, as he tries to make too many plays for his team mates?
at least that how i read it

He was really high on Craig Button’s list. Ahead of Kirby Dach
Not the first time there’s been correlation between that list and the Flames picks

I like the kid but ranking him ahead of Dach once again reflects that CB is a freakin moron.

Wasn’t the guy I was hoping for but after reading up on him I’m sold on the kid. If he can become a solid middle-6 winger who’s a bit of a pest I’m in. The idea of a Marchand or Gallagher lite on this team excites me.

Of course we all love size, but that's no guarantee that a player will actually use that size. So if JP has some tenacity, grit, a second gear; something sorely lacking in the playoffs, I'm all for it.

Looked it up, Button had Dach at 12 and Pelletier at 33 on Jun 6th

Admittedly I haven't seen him play, but how can you be a play maker that finds sticks AND be selfish with the puck?
That said, I'm gonna follow up on this.

So I to answer the "Is he a puck hog?" question, the responses were: "What? No, I don't find that at all" and "He definitely likes having the puck, but with a 40 goal guy on his line I wouldn't say he's a puck hog, not to the detriment of the team anyway."
I'll take the QMJHL media guys' opinions on this one.

The way I see it, we've got another small kid. I know, it's all crapshoot after the 3rd pick anyway... but I was disappointed we didn't pick Adam Foote or John Beecher. Both big, powerful forwards, both pretty much guaranteed NHL players... This fascination with "skill over size" is nice as a proclamation, but really they need to start trying to pick both rather than one... We have no power forwards on the farm. We have no big skilled defensemen on the farm. How the hell are we gonna be able to get any playoff success?

By playing with some passion and intensity. Size has nothing to do with our lack of playoff success. Two of our biggest forwards (Monahan and Jankowski) don't play to their size.
Nolan (Adam is the father) Foote is not a guaranteed NHL player.

Exactly, it wasn’t a size issue it was an effort issue. Marchand has no problem in the playoffs.

Jaden Schwartz didn't seem to struggle in the playoffs this year either.

I think the Flames lost to Colorado mostly because speed and intensity (which I think are related to each other).
Like others have said, size doesn't appear to have much to do with it. Lindholm, Ryan and Bennett were some of the forwards to seemed to player better than others. They aren't overly large.
Development is extremely important. The Flames have a long track record of successfully developing these types of players.
Sometimes it's smart to stick with what you're good at.
It's worked out pretty well for the Predators. They trade away a defenseman almost every year and barely even notice.
