Or he's lying.
So they are penny pinching on a reliable closer, one they decided to give his own entrance sequence to, since there are no injury concerns. Meanwhile tossing out $900MM CDN to land Soto.
I know all these things are relative, and money saved on Romano isn't for Soto, etc etc, and I know everything Atkins and Shapiro do are planned and staged (ie Soto isn't coming here but get in front of the fans before that comes out so it's not a "well we almost got him" focus) but it's just a bad overall look to treat players you supposedly value.

Definitely lying. If he wanted him he would be here. Completely in his control probably unhealthy (not ruining his market that way)

If he comes out and says Romano's arm is f'd, then he really destroys opportunities for Romano. Probably best left with a more general comment, but my guess is he is lying because he didn't want to hurt Romano's chances of signing elsewhere.

It's shocking to me how bad this team is currently, how little depth it has in the prospect pool, yet they are 9th in payroll spending. Mind bottling.

Putting on my teachers hat, apologies..
The verb to boggle, a great term that is no longer very common in everyday conversation, means "to overwhelm or bewilder." Mind-boggling occurs when a mind is overwhelmed; mind-bottling occurs when friends aren't kind enough to correct other friends on their improper use of common English phrases.
The correct phrase is "mind-boggling", which means something is extremely difficult to understand or imagine, or is incredibly amazing. "Mind bottling" is not a common phrase.

I am not a fan of Atkins as previously stated he probably should be gone
But we have made the playoffs quite a bit recently. Some years good teams miss. We had some injuries. We changed lots of coaches (they can go stale). Prospects are coming up slowly. Initially we traded a bunch not so much recently.
One bad year doesn't ruin a team they have a chance his year. Lots of up and downs. Vlad amd bo still young we have a solid rotation and some other pieces.
The rest of off-season will be interesting. I will be thrilled if they sign vlad and a few others and go on a run. It's hard to compete against these high spending teams. We have a lot of flexibility in next couple years for payroll it's not that bad. Atkins has been smart with long term contracrs

Hahaha, oh man Cheese, that's one of the bigger grammatical memes in the last 20 years. Surprised you've never seen or heard it in all that time.

Cheese quit the CPHL because he was going senile. It's just bleeding over into his day-to-day posting.

Man, you must be one of the happiest people in the world. Glass half full!
Anyway, I disagree with a lot of what you mentioned, personally. Atkins hasn't been terrible, but I'd rate him pretty bad generally. He locked in Springer to a long term deal. But he can't sign Vlad or Bo. With their payroll they should've done way more over the Atkins tenure. Rotation and Bullpen generally I'd give a very good grade most years - they've done a generally good job there. Drafting, terrible. Trades, picking guys who outperformed, they've done alright, but nobody truly groundbreaking like AA picking up Bautista. Instead they've done IKF who overperformed but wasn't an impact player. Having financial flexibility is great but they've missed signing their stars and haven't drafted well enough. Tough position to be.

Yeah. And AA probably gets Vlad locked up long term early (eg, Acuņa).
This management team has definitely underperformed considering the budget they've had to work with.

lol definitely half full!
underperforming budget for sure. How can you be happy? I thought we would ws in 2019
I am cautiously optimistic about prospect i do follow alot (more than most) so there is some bias.
horwitz not a list .... eg they dont have to be top prospects to do good. lot of older guys. lukes did ok! etc etc.
just lists are lists and they are bit biased towards youth. tommy john too killed our stock but some arms (hopefully). Nimalla looks like a stud.
We traded alot of picks early in the bo/vlad era to get players! also dry from anthopoulos taking a run. but still not enough after bo and vlad and manoah super dry thats why we suck
we don't have a vernon wells contract, tulo contract etc. springer is bad but he is close to playable. no stanton contracts.
he will be defined by locking or not locking up guerrero. do or die this year. last year i feel.

The perplexing thing is Atkins and crew come from great developmental system and inherited a strong farm system
Since then they have done nothing with it or their picks
Trades meh mostly.
FA signings have been mostly amazing. MVP candidates, Cy Young finalists.
That's usually the hardest part.
So here we enter a year where we will almost assuredly have a top 7 payroll, our two young best players with 1 foot out the door, no real impact prospects, no bullpen - literally , and lots of holes
I guess on the plus we have very little payroll tied up past 2026 so after Vlad and Bo leave this year it will be a full reset, start rebuilding the farm with the comp picks for them, and start all over on a 5 year cycle to challenge again.
This cycle will (most likely) end without a playoff victory. Embarassing
