Outfield is way crowded now... need to trade a couple of guys.

Sign a plus defender in the outfield for the 4th spot, have Brantley/Teoscar DH and play outfield, trade two of Rowdy/Grichuk/Gurriel, address 3B (No, Vlad is not the answer there... he play 1B), get a #3 or better SP.

Grichuk is who everyone is going to want to move but I just don't see it as I don't think you'd get anything for him. Guess it depends on the goal but if you want to use the surplus to get anything of value I think you have to move Gurriel, maybe Hernandez. If you just want to clear $ and a roster spot maybe Grichuk gets moved but I think they are eating money to do it. Might not even be worth it.

OF looked like a big weakness, both short term and long term, and they've turned it into a strength overnight. Good stuff from Jays.

Grichuk won’t be impossible to trade, but he has far less value then Hernandez/Gurriel.

You trade Grichuk if you can, but then you still have one of Hernandez/Gurriel on the bench (or DH, but then where’s Vlad/Tellez).

Grichuk won’t get a nice return. But one of the other two will. So you trade from your bench for a nice return that can add to the rotation,

It raises the ceiling substantially, and only drops the floor a little.

Grichuk’s contract will likely protect/prevent a move, and the ONLY reason you trade him is to shed the salary. A Grichuk trade won’t help the team very much, but a Hernandez/Gurriel trade can and would.

Would suck to see one go, but it’s the logical next move I personally believe.

I think Brantley will be more of the default DH with a bit of time in LF. I don’t expect him to play OF that much.

I think you could easily move Grichuk if you package him with a prospect. He’ll give a team some production for relatively cheap. But I see room for him to stay as the 4th outfielder if you sell Hernandez as the full time DH/5OF. I’m too lazy to check Teo’s splits at DH last year but I think he handled it well. I’m weary of trading him or Gurriel as they seem to be great clubhouse guys and you don’t want to rock the core too much.

Can you trade picks in the MLB?

Part of the evaluation of Hernandez, I would think, would be if you sell high on him now. Was last year a moment where it clicked and that's the player going forward - or was it a one off?

I don’t like Grichek, but I think numbers and age always are worth something in baseball. I can totally see a package of him and a ~10 best prospect going the other way for a third string SP to a team looking to unload and rebuild. His contract really sucks but he’s a serviceable guy. Too bad that’s all he is but I’m sure there are a few teams who would want to work on him to see if they can squeeze out more. Gurriel definitely has more value but I surprisingly think Grichek has more value outside the organization based on potential.

I think trading Hernandez would be a bad idea. He has serious potential and while it may not eventually pan out, it is high enough that I’d like to see him competing for that third OF spot. I don’t know if the return would be as nice so I’d think they’d be selling low.

Going to be very interesting to watch what happens now.

Maybe they trade Grichuk, eat some money in the deal and keep Springer, Brantley, Teoscar and Gurriel as the 4 outfielders and rotate a couple of them through the DH spot.

I liked the earlier idea of using Gurriel/Hernandez, Tellez, and a catcher as bait to snag Bryant and Hendricks.

Maybe they can snag Gray or Castillo from the Reds and bring Moustakas back in the deal too.

Either one of those deals shores up the rotation, and fills the hole at 3B too.

I am pretty damn excited right now.

They've loaded up the team, it's competitive with a ton of room to grow, and as one poster mentioned, they still have a really strong prospect pool.

What's the money situation like now after Brantley?

Assuming he comes in around $15 million, is the payroll sitting around $125 million with everybody?

Still room for Bauer

I wonder what Trevor Rosenthal's ask is. He'd be a solid high leverage bullpen arm to add.

I also wonder if Brantley is going to DH mostly. then it would be:

LF - Gurriel
CF - Springer
RF - Teoscar
DH - Brantley
4th OF - Grichuk

With Brantley’s injuries and age, he is going to need to play a lot of DH. He is. professional hitter, one of the best.

Surprised he got a 3 year deal. I guess that’s why he and Springer are Jays. They ponied up big time.

I think the team is still in development mode - even with Springer, Brantley, and Yates. We are definitely competitive now but, if we want to build a competitive long term team, we should be hesitant to move a young player like Gurriel.

This Brantley signing was reported by all sorts of media people, there are already articles written about it on TSN and Snet but apparently it ISN'T official.

Yikes.

Oh man. I hope he’s not squeezing the Jays for another year. That wouldn’t be good.

Nice moves, but it does make Brantley the 4th outfielder and Rowdy a bench bat. Considering the Cubs want to cut salary and get younger, a Rowdy with Hernandez for Bryant and Hendricks looks pretty ripe. The Jays would have to salt in a couple of prospects in the 10-20 range organizationally.

Could be an exciting season with one more move.
