Biggio, Bichette and Vlad all cash in for 2025. Assuming that you can keep them, that only eats one year of Springer that you have to sell to another club. But then again, all baseball contracts are nonsense, so I'm totally good with going all in while the kids are under team control. 2025 is new GMs problem.

Yes, an overpayment, certainly with the Mets well out of the picture.

But for all the blabbing about spending money these past couple months, Shapiro and Atkins (desperately) had to pull the trigger on a big fish and to their credit, they landed him...and I suspect also aided by the fact that his close buddy Brantley's (overpayment) announcement is not far away from the Jays.

May have to address the log jam in the outfield and Grichuk seem the logical choice, which opens up $ to spend somewhere else.

Personally I would have gone after Realmuto and/or Bauer before Springer, but Springer is a big upgrade in the OF and it's a win for the team. It also shows the young guys that the team is serious about winning.

I also really like Brantley and getting him would add a really nice LH bat to the lineup.

If Brantley does sign I wonder if they would package Gurriel and a catcher to get a starter.

Now this is unlikely but I wonder if Gurriel a catcher and a few other prospects is enough to get Bryant and Hendricks from the Cubs.

I think Gurriel for Bryant isn’t unlikely , but very likely if they sign Brantley . Seems this may have been the end to end plan

Yeah. I’m sure they had a few scenarios lined up where if one of the big FA signed there would be a series of other moves they’d pursue. It only makes sense not to put all eggs in a basket then scramble if one doesn’t work out. Should be a fun couple weeks ahead to hear what more they’re looking to do.

This is fantastic news - great to see an A list FA want to come to Toronto. CF is such an important position and was arguably the weakest link with respect to the fielding positions.

They still need another quality starter if they have aspirations of being competitive though. I am not going to get my hopes up too high until that happens.

I also think the overall lineup is better if they move Guerrero back to 3rd. He has clearly taken his conditioning seriously (that pic is amazing), and he isn't a terrible fielder. Having him at 3rd opens 1st for Tellez.

CF Springer R
2B Biggio L
SS Bichette R
DH Hernandez R
3B Guerrero R
RF Brantley L
LF Gurriel R
1B Tellez L
C Catcher R
(maybe switch Brantley and Tellez)

That is definitely a contender lineup. And I think the BP is solid. But you have nothing if you don't have starting pitching. One more quality guy, please.

As of today my lineup would be:

Biggio 2B
Bichette SS
Springer CF
Hernandez DH
Gurriel LF
Guerrero 3B
Tellez1B
Grichuk RF
Jansen C

Getting Brantley would be a real nice move too as I would agree the Jays need another Lefty bat for some balance.

would really suck to lose Gurriel who has turned into one of my favorite players, and I think is a bargain at his contract. But Grichuk isn't worth anything in trade and it would be hard to ignore the potential asset management win it would be to be able to pick up a starter via trade.

A reporter who writes for the Braves on the Athletic claims the Jays agreed to a deal with Brantley late last night.

I guess we'll see if anyone else picks up on this.

Signing Brantley would be quite a coup. The Astros declined to extend him a QO of $18.9 million, thinking he would come cheaper on another two year deal. I know they still want him back though.

Can't imagine he gets more than two years in this market. Maybe $30 to $35 million, similar to his last deal.

Isn't a terrible fielder at 3rd? Compared to who?

He had the 2nd most errors (Despite playing some DH), a .936 fielding %, and one of the worst range factors in the league

He literally may be the worst fielding 3B in the league.

Whether he has improved is another question. But stating it like a fact is wrong. He is horrendous at D at 3rd.

I mean even if they can still bring in Kolten Wong to play 2B which moves Biggio to 3B, that improves the infield a lot. Then you can have Guerrero and Tellez split time at 1B/DH.

This is so much fun.

They are making a run for it. And unlike 2015, haven’t used their prospects and youth to do it. We will have a competitive team for the next few years.

This lineup is going to be miserable for other teams to have to deal with.

Hopefully not Gurriel or Hernandez unless it's for a legitimate top of the rotation starter coming back.

Ideally it would be Grichuk.

Springer, Brantley, Gurriel, Hernandez would be a hell of an outfield.

Grichuk has next to no trade value, he is also a great guy to have as a 4th OF as he can play all 3 OF positions. My guess is that Gurriel or Hernandez are getting traded shortly. Both have 3 years of team control and are cheap.

Still need an infielder and at least one starter. Still holding out hope we sign Bauer too.

Yeah. I’m so happy at this. Brantley will be a steal, and IMO, just important as Springer. While I don’t feel like looking it up, Grichek’s WAR numbers over his career have been positive so I’m sure that means something to teams. He’s gotta be the odd man out especially with the ability to play CF. I’m hoping Gurriel is kept if possible, because he’s reached his potential. But if you have to deal him for pitching then so be it. But Grichek has got to go.
