Mariners signed Giles to a 2 year deal. With his TJS he won't pitch this year, but they'll get him on a cheap deal for 2022 hoping he rebounds into elite closer form again.
Good for him, he was elite and in line for a massive pay day until our idiot manager broke him.
I wish the Jays would have done this to be honest.

I mean, I highly doubt a guy who's played baseball his entire life and for multiple years as a professional, can't catch a fly ball.

Probably makes the team instead of Urena/Espinal as the spare infielder.
I think this was probably plan C or D, but hard to get guys like Gonzales or Miller to sign here knowing their playing time will be severely limited as opposed to where they ended up signing.

Don't mind bringing Panik back at all. He won't need him to play SS for us this year, so he is a very capable 2B/3B option off the bench. He is also a lefty bat who gives you professional at bats.

Paxton is signing with the Mariners. I was really hoping he would sign with the Jays. Odorizzi is the best starter left on the market, my guess is that he is probably looking for a multi year deal. I would go two years for him. Walker would be a good signing, but he seemed to have trouble getting deep into games, seemed like he rarely got passed the 4th inning.

Dammit Paxton
Not the news I wanted hear
I'm not too thrilled with Walker, and Odirizzi on a multi year deal doesn't excite me either.
Meh. Hopefully the Jays FO has something else up their sleeve. There isn't much out there in the FA market anymore that'll really move the needle the way a Paxton bounce back season would have.

Apparently the Jays stayed in contact with Paxtons camp but never offered a contract? Plus in the end he only got 1 year for $8.5 million?
The league must think he's toast and not a likely candidate to bounce back I guess.
He'll, the Jays gave Ray $8 million on a 1 year deal.
I'm going to predict they end up signing Walker.

Yamaguchi has been released and the Jays will be on the hook for his $3.1 million owed this season.

Apparently he didn't look very good in his showcase.
I wonder what the asking price is for Gray or Castillo.

Probably pretty high.
Apparently the Jays were in on Bauer right until the end, if true that would lead you to believe that they would still be looking to add a starter. Maybe though it was Bauer or bust, unless a sweet bargain falls in their laps?
Could be they are fine going with what they have for now and seeing how things shake out with their pitching staff. All it would take is to have any two or three of Pearson, Ray, Matz, Roark, Stripling, Chatwood, Merryweather, Thornton, Kay or Hatch to bounce back/take a step forward and the starting rotation is suddenly passable to decent. There is also other dark horses on the 40 man or some of the NRI's like Luciano, SWR, Manoah, Murray, Murphy, Castro, Allgeyer, Waguespack and Zeuch who might surprise and earn a shot sometime in 2021.
Doesn't seem too far fetched to me to have 2 or 3 out of the 15-20 pitchers listed there make some noise in a good way in 2021.
Then if the team is the hunt they can make a mid season trade to add a mid to front rotation arm and just like that the rotation is very formidable.

Yeah I am thinking it probably costs a young roster player plus one of the prospects from the top 100 list and a few others for Castillo and Gray. They both have a few years of control left and are cheap for what they bring to the table.
Depending on price I would be fine with Odorizzi or Walker on a two year deal. I would probably prefer Odorizzi just because he has been remarkably consistent.
As far as built in options, I think Ray and Matz are probably the two best bets to bounce back as they have very good stuff. Maybe the change in ball will help Roark's curveball which seemed to fail him at times last season. Pearson will be great as long as he can stay healthy. Merryweather, Chatwood and Hatch all have really intriguing stuff can they stay healthy as starters. Stripling Kay and Thornton probably have the least impressive stuff out of the bunch they are spot starters/long men out of the pen type players.
Hopefully there is enough there to hold onto a playoff spot till the deadline, I just have my doubts.

Ot: Just noticed MLB and it’s drastic re org of the minor leagues late last week.
Some teams basically forced out of Milb alltogether, or demoted down levels in Milb.
RIP to the Pacific Coast League and to the Pioneer League.
I’m old enough to have gone to a Foothills for a couple Calgary Expos games with my dad whilst in the Pioneer League, playing the Medicine Hat Blue Jays, among others.
