Default Calgary Flames All Time Roster - #3 Goaltender

So some details ...

1. Calgary players only
2. I'll look at games played, production and PPG to list options.
3. My cut off won't effect options as I'll go deeper than required
4. I'll label them by rank (3rd line LW) but don't select the player that matches that role the best, pick the best player.

Day to Day

We elect a position, say 2nd line RW, remove that name and do the 3rd line RW the next day.

I'll post a summary as we go along.

Calgary Flames All Time Roster

Gary Roberts - Joe Nieuwendyk - Jarome Iginla
Johnny Gaudreau - Doug Gilmour - Theo Fleury
Matthew Tkachuk - Sean Monahan - Lanny McDonald
Alex Tanguay - Joel Otto - Joe Mullen
Hakan Loob - Kent Nilsson

Al MacInnis - Mark Giordano
Gary Suter - Robyn Regehr
Paul Reinhart - Brad McCrimmon
TJ Brodie

Miikka Kiprusoff
Mike Vernon

Went with Rittich.

It’s a big list of bad goalies.

Rittich could be something more...and I like him, and that makes me want to cheer for him.

Lemilin 3rd in games played and wins behind Kipper and Vernon. Plus he was the goalie for the Flames when my fandom started, has to be him for me.

For a Franchise that's been in Calgary for ~30 years, it's quite sad how hard it is to pick the 3rd best goalie during that time. Not because there's too many to pick from, but rather the sheer putridity of the options.

It's gotta be Lemelin in my mind. But he's so far back that I could see him being overlooked.

Lemelin's stats may not look impressive in this day and age but he was a solid NHL goaltender and when I look at the organization's history there have only really been three established starting goaltenders and that is Lemelin, Vernon, and Kipper. All the others were year to year for the most part.

My vote goes to Turek. He was all class, and wasn't really a part of it afterwards, but certainly helped define the organization.

https://thehockeywriters.com/what-ha...o-roman-turek/

"Turek had two years remaining on his deal, but he understood that Miikka Kiprusoff would be the future in Calgary’s crease and restructured his deal so the Flames could potentially have enough money to re-sign Kiprusoff and Jarome Iginla. Even though the 2004-2005 NHL lockout would change Turek’s future plans of playing hockey in North America, the goalie’s ability to put his team before himself was an action that defined the Czech’s selfless and professional attitude."

Flames goaltending history is admittedly weak- but not at the 3rd position

Lemelin received all star votes in 5 different seasons, top 3 in Vezina voting twice (as a Flame), one season finished 8th in Hart voting. Played for Canada in the 84 Canada Cup

he was one of the teams best players in their first half decade in Calgary

Lemelin is an easy choice. He was one of three great goalies the Calgary Flames have had. The drop off from Lemelin to #4 is steep.

I was considering voting for McLennan, but having gone through the other posts, I have been convinced to vote for Lemelin.

If you take out Dan Bouchard, because he played 99% of his games for Atlanta:

Lemelin is 3rd in wins
Lemelin is 3rd in games played
Lemelin is 1st in goals saved above average
Lemelin is 1st in goals allowed adjusted
Lemelin is 3rd in minutes played
Lemelin is 3rd shots against
Lemelin is 3rd in saves

Pretty clear to me who wins this one.

I couldn't see the video but I knew which exactly player and which play this was referring to. A classic.

Definitely Lemelin.

This is one of the categories that if you included Atlanta tenure, maybe Dan Bouchard is in the mix.

This was a really fun exercise and offered a chance to watch some old film and dig into the season-by-season Flames-only numbers. Thanks a lot for organizing.

My final "best player" team, which ended up fairly different than the group's.

In: Patterson, Langkow, Phaneuf, Macoun
Out: Tanguay, Otto, Regehr, Brodie

I found defence quite a bit more difficult than forwards and could easily have had 98-99 Housley, 03-04 Regehr, 14-15 Brodie, or 16-17 Hamilton in the 6/7 spots.
On forward, 06-07 Tanguay warranted serious consideration but no one else, for me.

Some line choices, e.g. McCrimmon versus Reinhart, were essentially coin flips so line swapping to be had.

91-92 Roberts / 90-91 Gilmour / 01-02 Iginla
19-20 Tkachuk / 89-90 Nieuwendyk / 90-91 Fleury
18-19 Gaudreau / 80-81 Nilsson / 88-89 Mullen
88-89 Patterson / 18-19 Monahan / 83-83 McDonald
06-07 Langkow / 87-88 Loob

88-89 MacInnis / 18-19 Giordano
87-88 Suter / 87-88 McCrimmon
82-83 Reinhart / 07-08 Phaneuf
89-90 Macoun

05-06 Kiprusoff
88-89 Vernon
83-84 Lemelin

Might dig into a "best career with the Flames" version for fun as there will be some big tenure-based changes with that.

Why did 3 people vote for Kidd? I wish there was a negative vote option to cancel one of them out.

I probably should vote Lemelin but am going to treat this one a little differently. The 3rd goalie pretty much never plays so I’m going 100% on personal popularity. So Braithwaite it is. He definitely brought a lot of enjoyment to what was a very dark time as a Flames fan.

I voted Turek too, he played behind a couple absolutely awful teams and then when the team in front of him finally got good, he got hurt and we acquired Kipper. After returning from his injury, he was almost as good as Kipper was. Then as you noted he restructured his deal to help the team out before the lockout ended his NHL career. I feel like had there been no lockout season and Turek returned, he would have taken so much pressure off Kipper in the regular season that maybe he'd have taken us further in the playoffs.

If we were to break segments down of a season, the single best stretch I have personally witnessed was in the month that Iginla was out after fighting Bryan Allen.

Kristian Huselius went into absurd god mode the entire time.

If he played like that all the time...

So what's next?

Voting for the all-time second/farm team? Best jersey? Best Harvey moment? Best highlight save/goal/hit?

It's not like I want to work while I'm at work

Noodles was always the consummate back up.
To the point that he was requested by some starters to be the team back up.
