I would guess that the gov gives the green light to expand "quarantine" of players to include the hub arena and accommodation, provided that there is testing, which will allow for on ice practice immediately after travel.

So for the sessions beginning tomorrow, will they only include Flames players or will any NHLers who live in Calgary be participating? I know Lucic has been skating with some Canucks players in Vancouver... I think Brouwer (St Louis) still lives here.

I can see that happening. Green and Eberle have been skating locally in Calgary the last week in private sessions, so it wouldnt be a reach to allow non flames to join the Calgary group in the city till the rest of the team comes or its deemed safe to travel.

If you're ever worried about the state of the team...that could be our starting line.

Its cool to hear that Matthew Phillips was out there. He has recently been noticed by the enemy. Oilers' writer Allan Mitchell argues in the Athletic that Matthew Phillips is one of "5 AHL forwards who offer the Oilers a chance to buy low on real talent."

Pretty cool to see some recognition for an underdog...

Is he smoking crack?
Why would the Flames

a) trade Phillips before we've even given him a shot.
b) "sell" low on him.
c) trade him to the Oilers?

Edmonton journalists seem to believe there is an Oilers clause somewhere that says they can get their hands on any prospect in any organization, including their arch rival's if they please.

Very strange to think Phillips is someone they can get their hands on easily.

But I mean feel free to pony up a classic Chiarelli-era overpayment.

Since the other thread was locked for some reason, is this where we're discussing everything about the return to play plans and not just the Flames?

----------

Tonight, Sportsnet is reporting the same thing that broke a couple of days ago, that Vegas has been chosen as one of the hubs: https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/...ected-june-22/

However, they quote the Las Vegas Review Journal as their source, which doesn't actually say that Vegas has been chosen, only that they expect the league to announce the hubs on June 22: https://www.reviewjournal.com/entert...ction-2052030/

Quote:
The NHL will announce June 22 whether Las Vegas will be a hub city to host the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs, according to a source familiar with the planning process.

Until then, MGM Resorts International plans to keep some hotels not currently open to the public off the market so that one or more could be available to host visiting teams after July 1.

The Sportsnet story also says that the desire is to have the second hub in Canada, with the preference being Toronto, if the federal government will relax the 14 day quarantine requirement...
Quote:
Ideally, the NHL would like to have a Canadian city serve as a hub alongside Vegas, but that won’t be finalized until the federal government makes a ruling. Toronto is the preferred destination, assuming the quarantine issue can be managed.

If that comes to be, and if the reports that the home team won't be playing in their own hub, we could see the Flames and the rest of the Western Conference teams making Toronto their home for a few months. I guess that's one way for Toronto to host the Stanley Cup Final, since we know the Leafs will never do it on their own.

It would also seem to indicate that Edmonton and Vancouver are out of the running as hubs.

Is it that big a deal that the home teams don't play in their own hub? Seems like a huge added expense to move all the Western Conference teams east and vice versa. Not to mention how it would affect times for TV. I just don't see it as a huge advantage, especially with no crowds.

The whole point is it doesn’t matter what time the game is because you don’t have to worry about appeasing a home crowds schedule.

An eastern team can still start their game at 5pm mountain and it would be fine cause no fans are attending.
