Also, in a more recent video they explain how Defender can be hardened to protect against malware. Pretty easy to do and a good idea if you're using Defender.

It came it came my computer finally came. Too bad the room in the basement I was going to turn into my office just flooded during that hail storm the other day.

So now I get to sit and stare at all my new computer gear and not set it up. I wonder how mad my gf would be if I just set it all up on the kitchen table.

Good thing it flooded before you got your computer set up.

This computer gets more expensive by the day! Damned shoe upgrades*.

*Why yes, that was a reference to that Disney movie.

Not mentioned yet, but a supposed 3080 Timespy benchmark "leaked" and outfits are claiming it's 30% faster (in a synthetic) than a 2080 Ti, or 20% faster than an RTX Titan.

Pretty snazzy if it is, but I won't be excited til they show off what the Ray Tracing advantages look like.

Building this ~$1,600 rig right now, actually kinda similar to Deviaant's setup above. I do zero gaming and it's purely for photo/video editing and heavy productivity apps. A 2060 is likely more than I'll need but still gives me some headroom to do video effects if that is required down the road while saving a couple hundred over the 2060 Super I originally spec'd.

Ryzen 7 3700X
MSI B450 Bazooka board
G.skill 32GB DDR4 3200MHz
480 GB Kingston SATA SSD (boot)
250 GB Kingston M.2 SSD (scratch)
2 TB Seagate Barracuda
Gigabyte RTX 2060
Corsair 100R Case and CV550 power supply

I've been not paying attention to PC stuff for a while and to come back now and see the performance in mid-range gear is absurd. My last 2 computers have been pre-built; the last time I physically bought a stick of ram I think it was an $89 256 MB stick to bring my rig up to 512 and I was floored at how much better my games were running. Now 32 GB is $165. I hate noise and might pick up a Noctua U14S if the stock cooler starts annoying me.

Have you looked into EVGA 2060 KO ? It has a TU-104-150 die which is a cutdown 2070/2080 chip. Still the same performance as other 2060s but the workstation/rendering/compute is higher than other 2060's.

I don't know the current status of Kingston SSD's, however using one of their m.2 ssd's as a scratch drive may provide lower performance than higher priced equivalent Western Digital or Samsung M.2 drives.

There is also the question of Terabytes written for the scratch disk as well, as smaller SSD's have fewer cells than larger ones( yes obvious) leading to faster cell death and lower total TBW (terabytes written) than the next size or 1tb size SSDs's. also depending on how fast that scratch disk will be filled will also contribute to SSD wear.

However if it's just for now then upgrade later then that's also a valid strategy.

Gamer's Nexus on the EVGA 2060 KO

Picked up the 2060 used so I'm saving about $100 over a new EVGA KO, but I did see that video when I started looking into it more. Not too worried on the SSD given their price, not too much of a headache to step up as required. Might not even be pushing much to the M.2 as most of the work is 4-5 GB uploads of photography stills which I'll likely just push directly to mech storage I'm carrying over from my current machine.

Not sure if I should start another thread for this (let me know if you think I should).

My son wants to purchase a gaming laptop for his birthday. I moved from PC to Mac a decade ago so I'm completely out of touch when it comes to PCs. I recommended a laptop so he can take it with him when we go on vacation or if he needs to move from his gaming space.

He has a $1500 budget. What should I be looking for? Any tips on the best place to get bang for your buck?

I'll always recommend MSI stuff for gaming laptops.

Refurbs are the best way to stretch your buck (MemEx has some but you can usually find more on eBay, but it can be a gamble).

Something new like this would be pretty solid ($1399)

https://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX81313

Thin series (extremely light, I have one for work), i7-1050H, 16GB RAM, 512 GB m.2 drive, GTX 1650m

An older (new) Thin model on Ebay for $1449, 9xxx series i7, but 120hz monitor and a 1660 Ti GPU instead, shipping from within Canada:

I’m new to the PC space but might have the opportunity to grab this laptop for a pretty good deal, what are people’s thoughts on the specs and build of Gigabyte stuff

Based on my 6 hours so far with my new build with a Gigabyte card, I like it so far.

For my usage the 32 GB makes a much bigger difference than the card but this 2060 is well built and quiet.

$2400 is pretty pricey but I would toss cash at it if it was less than 2k for sure, esp if it's your primary unit.

OLED, 10875 and a 2070m is solid specs for sure. 4K is a bit wasted on a 15.6 but you know.

Time to do a fresh new build for myself. Here's what I am going to go with:

https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/84Rs27

AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 3.6 GHz 8-Core Processor
Asus TUF GAMING X570-PLUS ATX AM4 Motherboard
G.Skill Trident Z RGB 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory
Intel 660p Series 1.02 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive
Asus GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER 8 GB DUAL EVO OC Video Card
Corsair iCUE 220T RGB ATX Mid Tower Case
Corsair RM (2019) 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply
Corsair iCUE SP120 RGB Pro 52 CFM 120 mm Fan

Roughly $2000 all said and done.

Ordered up the Case from Canada Computers in Ontario, seems like there is such a lack of case stock out there right now. Everything else I will pick up at memory express this evening! Hoping the case arrives this Friday so I can build on the weekend!
