Default Thursday February 8 - Days -1 & 0 (00:00-23:59 MST)

Going to post this early today because I've gotta head to bed relatively early tonight in preparation for work, and to try and get up early for the really early competitions.

A pretty light schedule today compared to what we’ll be seeing later on when the games officially open. Day -1 at 04:05 we’ll see the Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling pair of Kaitlyn Lawes and John Morris take on the American team in their second match of the day after losing 9-6 against Norway. Lawes who is from Winnipeg won a Gold Medal in Sochi as the third for Jennifer Jones team. Morris lives in Canmore and is a firefighter with the Rocky View County Fire Service, he does a large part of his curling out of Calgary's Glencoe Club. John won a Gold Medal in Vancouver as the third for Kevin Martin’s team. This morning’s match will be taking place on TSN.

At 05:30 on Sportsnet coverage of the Qualifying Round for the Men’s Normal Hill Ski Jumping will begin. Mackenzie Boyd-Clowes is the only Canadian in competition. Boyd-Clowes who lives in Calgary and began ski jumping at age 7 at our own COP competed for Canada in this event in Vancouver and in Sochi.

Jumping to the afternoon and into what will be Day 0 of the games we’re back at the Gangneung Curling Centre (where the ice has been made by Canadian Hans Wutrich) for a 16:35 match between Morris and Lawes and the team from China, it seems like this event will be on TSN.

At 18:00 Figure Skating begins with the Men’s Short Program in the Team Event. Toronto’s Patrick Chan, Lou Marsh Award Winner, two time Olympic Silver Medalist and three time World Champion, has been selected to skate for Canada. At 19:45 the Pairs Short Program will begin, with 2015 and 2016 World Champions Meghan Duhamel and Eric Radford skating for Canada. The figuring skating events will be on CBC.

At 18:00 the Qualification for Ladies’ Moguls begins! Chloe Dufour-Lapointe will be looking to improve on the Silver Medal she earned in Sochi, while younger sister Justine is the one defending the Gold Medal in this event. 22 year old Andi Naude, who finished 13th at the 2017 FIS World Championships competes in her first Olympics for Canada as well as Audrey Robichaud of Quebec competing in her 3rd Olympics, looking to improve on an 8th place finish in Turin and a 10th place finish in Sochi. This event should be on TSN.

19:45 sees the Qualification begin for the Men’s Moguls. Mikael Kingsbury, the most dominant male moguls skier of all time, and probably the most dominant Canadian athlete currently competing in any sport is a favourite in this event. Kingsbury is looking to improve on the Silver Medal he earned in Sochi, where he shared the podium with one of our heroes of 2010 Alex Bilodeau. Marc-Antoine Gagnon also looks to improve on his 2014 showing where he just missed the podium finishing in 4th place. Phillipe Marquis will also ski for Canada, after finishing 9th in Sochi he captured a Bronze Medal at the Pyeongchang Test Event earlier this season. Like the Ladies’ event earlier this too should be on TSN.

At 21:35 the round robin portion of the Curling Mixed Doubles event continues as Canada takes on Finland. Pretty sure this one will be on TSN.

Go Canada Go!!!

Thank you so much for doing this! Just one tiny error: Justine is younger than Chloe

Canada defeats the US 6-4 in their second Mixed Doubles match. Improve to 1-1 in Round Robin play.

I wasn't sure if I was gonna enjoy Mixed Doubles curling but it's actually very interesting. Really liking it so far

CBC just ran a story about a incident between Canadian athletes/coaches and Russians. Sounded like it was serious enough for "letters" to be written to the IOC et al. Not sure if anyone else heard about it.

If I heard this right...

As the Canadian team leaves the ice, waving to an unresponsive crowd:

Lawes: "They're not looking."
Morris: "They're like, 'Aw, it was over ends ago.'"
Lawes: "Yay [sarcastic]."
Morris: "They're gone. My parents must have went to pee."

Moguls is an awesome event if you have ever tried them and been humbled.

I would have taken Chan getting 8 points going into it. The way he got it skating poorly was even crazier.

The Russian guy finished 8th for 3 points.Looked like he was missing (something).

Skiing moguls without an ACL is very impressive and I’m not sure how he can do it.

Canadian snow sloper Laurie Blouin took a really bad fall...stretchered off the course.
