Default Random Questions

So for those who don't know, I've only started cheering for the Flames in the Spring of 2015. I was a bandwagon fan then. I'm now a loyal fan.

I also happen to be fascinated with history, especially with regard to things that interest me. The Flames history, for example. That said, there have been a few random historical questions about this team that baffled me until today:

1. Why didn't the Flames call up Dion Phaneuf at any point during the 2003-04 season? Methinks his youthful energy could have been viable for the Flames en route to an actual Stanley Cup win. He could have added depth on the defensive end, too.

2. We could have used Jon Gillies in the Anaheim/Calgary series of two years ago. Looking back on it, I realized - why didn't he start in net for Game 2 (Chad Johnson was injured)? He was not the mediocre Gillies we know now. He was just one of the "future guys" at the time. And Elliott was (and still is) historically awful against the Ducks. Playoffs is all about making bold moves, eh? It could have been this. It would not mean much but at least the Flames showed they were ready to risk it all instead of hanging on with the shaky Elliott.

3. Have we used playoff towels at all?

Forgive me if I have to do this. I wanted to do this on Reddit but I came to realization that the old school fans probably prefer to read stuff here instead of Reddit. Them Reddit folks are mostly newbies IMO. And the timing is ridiculous LOL. But when you're so bothered by something, sometimes you need to let it out right?

Actually, wouldn't it be nice if we create thread devoted to several random thoughts on the Flames?

I can't answer question 1.

2. Elliott made sense to start Game 2. He played reasonably well in Game 1 -- the three goals he allowed were all either deflections or, in the case of the second goal, that horrible line change. It wasn't really until Game 3 where he completely fell apart. The more questionable start was Game 4 -- he was clearly done by then and everyone knew it.

3. Not in 2015 or 2017, at least.

1. Phaneuf was in junior not in the AHL. You can't call up players from Jr.

2. We weren't going to start a goalie with 1 NHL game of experience in game 2 of the playoffs. Elliott had only let in 3 goals and we lost by 1 in game 1 of that series.

3. No we haven't thankfully.

1. His junior team was well past done in 04. The Flames could have called him up, but he hadn’t signed an NHL contract at that point and with the lockout looming it was something both sides were conscious of in their decision making.

I agree. At the done we don’t have to hand out a colour to our Fanbase. I think it’s a rather hokey and contrived whereas the Saddledome is something genuine

They did try towels one year. I thought it was 2004, but maybe it was one of the playoff years between then and 2009. I recall it being widely criticized.

Yes, I went down to Anaheim in 2006 and 2015 and got towels at those games. I use them to clean my toilet.

When I was a kid went to game 7 against the sharks in 95... They gave out red towels to everybody with a flames logo, pic of the dome and the word stomp on them. Just randomly came across it the other day in a box in the garage, actually was kinda cool to find.

At least one good thing came from that game.

As for calling up Phaneuf. He would have had to make the team out of training camp or wait until his junior team was finished their season.

Incidentally, he was "called up" after Red Deer was done and he was there to soak up the NHL atmosphere during the finals. Red Deer made it to round three in 04.

Seems like a good thread to ask this question I've had for a long time.

1986 Game 7 Flames/oilers with approximately 34 seconds left the Flames were called for too many men. I believe this was intentional done by Badger Bob. I believe he had faith we'd win the draw and then be able to have a free shot at an empty net with no icing and precious seconds being eaten away. We lost the draw and it was mayhem for the dying seconds instead but it was already mayhem when the penalty was called.

When I think about this series I always wonder if this was something that was overlooked by the media or if I just like a good conspiracy theory. I don't think it's too far fetched given Badger's reputation for manipulating the game to his advantage.

Thoughts from those that were around to remember this game would be appreciated.
