Not trying to take sides but what exactly did Anderson do last night that would warrant a penalty? The head fake to Markstrom? Markstrom stuck his stick out, poked the bear, and when he came over trying to get Markstrom off his game more, Mangiapane went all Scrappy Doo.

I mean I have seen less called or evened up... usually if you go anywhere near a goalie after the whistle there is a scrum and the team defending the goalie gets a free crack or two.

Shooting the puck towards the net then going to air cross check the goalie usually is enough to get you 2 minutes for unsportsmanlike too

I’m more disappointed in the ineffective penalty kill. Literally entire cross-ice seam pass, you can’t let that happen. When’s the last time the Flames got an opportunity like that on their own PP?

And I have Mangiapane on the list above ...

Doesn't change the fact that the ref chose to pick one guy and impact the game. Would have been pretty easy to give Anderson an unsportsmanlike for the faked cross check charging a goaltender.

Everything a ref does impacts the game including calls and non calls.

Ultimately you control what you can and play the game as it is called. The Habs executed on their PP to their credit.

I noticed Lindholm’s stick on the opposite side of that passing lane

Nothing is easy when it comes to the discretion of NHL officials. They can't be trusted to make the right or fair call at any time. They let the Markstrom slash go and were willing to let Anderson get away with the fake out crosscheck. Then Mangiapane comes in and the officials had enough. Personally I think it was the right call there because Mangiapane can't take liberties on a player like that after the whistle.

Yeah that's why I had the refs #4 on my list of idiocy.

I'm totally onside with the notion that Mangiapane has to have more control and he runs the risk of taking a dumb minor if he doesn't temper or just avoid the reaction.

I didn't have a problem with the penalty call.

That whole situation was self inflicted.

I didn't either. It was self-inflicted, and the last couple calls had gone the other way. Total power plays were 4-3 for the Flames. You can debate many calls and non-calls every game, but it is hard to make the case that the refs influenced the outcome last night.

Flames 0 for 4, Habs 1 for 3.

It was a dumb move by Mangiapane but I imagine he know's he's struggling and his thinking was likely that he's got to do...something... and ended up over-reacting. I'm not giving him a pass but he is struggling and struggling players often do stupid things; likely because they are over-thinking their game.
