wranglers Phillips named AHL player of the month for November

News Update

https://theahl.com/ahl-award-winners-november-2022

Quote:
The American Hockey League announced today that Calgary Wranglers forward Matthew Phillips, Iowa Wild forward Sammy Walker and Hershey Bears goaltender Hunter Shepard have been selected as the league’s award winners for November.

Phillips, the AHL Player of the Month, scored nine goals and added nine assists for 18 points in 12 games for Calgary during November.

Phillips scored the winning goal with 1:35 to play in the Wranglers’ 3-2 victory over Tucson on Nov. 4, and paced the Calgary offense with a hat trick in an 8-2 win over San Jose on Nov. 6. His goal in a 4-0 win over the Barracuda two nights later ran his scoring streak to eight games, and he finished the month with a six-game streak, beginning with two assists in a 5-1 win at Bakersfield on Nov. 18. He scored the game-winner in the rematch with Bakersfield on Nov. 19, and picked up a goal and an assist in a 5-3 win over Coachella Valley on Nov. 22. Phillips then had back-to-back three-point games against Abbotsford, including a two-goal night on Nov. 25 and a career-high three assists on Nov. 27.

Phillips leads the AHL in scoring with 26 points and is tied for the league lead with 13 goals in 18 games for the Wranglers. The 24-year-old Calgary native is in his fifth pro season and has totaled 80 goals and 107 assists for 187 points in 217 AHL games with Calgary and Stockton, setting career highs with 31 goals and 68 points in 2021-22. A sixth-round pick by the Flames in the 2016 NHL Draft, Phillips has played one game in the NHL, making his debut on May 19, 2021, vs. Vancouver.

It doesn't reflect well on the franchise if he never gets his shot. He's clearly earned it and he sure seems like he could bring something the NHL club is lacking.

I can safely say that while I don't think Phillips is going to come up and change a whole ton, I'd much rather watch him get a shot in the top-6 than watch Sutter throw Trevor Lewis up there again.

Nobody loves 4th line grinders more than me, but seriously, this guy is lighting up the AHL and has been for a while now. How the hell does he only have 1 NHL game played? So weird

He looked good in that 1 game too! Lucic and Ruzicka were finding him for great chances, he just couldn't beat Demko iirc

Would Phillips have to go through waivers if he was called up?

Gonna need a couple of injuries to forwards to see him get game action. My guess if there is one injury , he would get called up and probably not play. I could see Sutter putting lucic up further in line and Rooney in before we saw Phillips play. Not saying that’s what I would do , but I can see Sutter doing it. For me I want him called up, but I want him to play.

He’s earned a call-up, no doubt about that. They’ve gotta make room for him but who? Waive Rooney and sit one of Looch, Ritchie, Dube or Lewis?

No need to waive anyone, really. Just call him up and sit (probably) Rooney.

You'd think if Treliving knows Sutter doesn't want Phillips up that he'd be trying to salvage some value through a trade. Maybe this is happening in the background or maybe there isn't much interest in him (though I can't see how that would be).

But to just let the top scorer in the AHL leave for nothing in free agency would be so Calgary Flames.

Problem is Tre knows Sutter isn’t dressing him over Lucic, Lewis, or Ritchie

I'm okay with him staying down for now. But the instant one of the top 9ers can't play, please call him up

I don't know about a trade...the guy cleared waivers not long ago you aren't getting much.

Teams are concerned about his size obviously, dominated the AHL last season too and nobody wanted to claim him.

All that being said I would give him a shot.

Would love to have Phillips up, by why do that when you can just double-shift trusty plugs like Lewis, Rooney, Lucic or Ritchie? Undersized, skilled forwards have no place on this team and can't add anything of value.
