Default FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022

General Discussion.

I posted in the Canada thread that I am quite torn on personally boycotting the event because how can I not watch Canada at the WC? My personal boycott won't move the needle at all. Luka's last kick at the can as well for Croatia; there yet may be some magic left.

Russia 2018 was opulent and wasteful, which is what dictators do, but nothing like this.

Before dawn every day, workers typically from India, Bangladesh, Nepal, the Philippines and Kenya are taken by bus from their designated accommodations to work on colossal stadiums. The trip can take hours, and temperatures regularly reach 102 degrees Fahrenheit.

The report said some work-related deaths may not have been properly recorded — a lack of information and potential errors by front-line medical staff members mean some work-related deaths may not have been recorded as such, it said. The International Labor Organization called for a review of how the deaths of healthy young men from “natural causes” are investigated.
Shameful.

Shameful.
It sucks but I wouldn't get caught up in that. There's been may events run by dictatorships. Sochi, Beijing twice. Rio (world cup and olympics) was a cluster####. China is never going to host a world cup which is saying something. The stuff behind the scenes there are indescribable.

Both Korean World Cup and Olympic were a shambles with direct cheating on the field.

So my advice is just enjoy the sporting side moreso than the venue.

The 1988 Seoul Olympics was staged by one of the worst military dictatorships in history.

I won't piss in anybody's cornflakes once this ####show starts, but if there's ever been a sporting event that needed boycotting, it's this one. People can bring up whataboutism regarding other events as much as they want, it doesn't change the fact that it overshadows all of them. Like, every single aspect about this world cup is reprehensible. You want an event that won the bid solely through corruption and bribery? You want a host nation that is basically a modern slave state that gives a #### about human rights? You want thousands of immigrant workers who, if they didn't die, have at least been enslaved and exploited in order to build those stadiums? Well, enjoy. Qatar 2022 has got you covered. Them and FIFA are counting on you to say "meh, it's bad, but I'm not going to not watch it".

#### Qatar 2022.

I think there are many ways to describe slavery but it sucks wouldn't be one of the them.

Why not get caught up in it? Why not keep the issue of slavery, of the deaths of multiple migrant workers, of their human rights record front and centre for the whole tournament? Everyone should be getting caught up in it.

I'll watch it. I'll follow it. But I just know already that I won't have the same level of interest in it as prior tournaments.

Ireland did the decent thing and didn't qualify so I'll be shouting for Canada but more so for the Danes for taking the lead on a big feck you to the host nation and deciding to get caught up in it.

Quote:
Denmark will wear shirts at the World Cup that criticise the human rights record of the host nation Qatar, with a black option unveiled to honour migrant workers who died during construction work for the finals tournament.

“The colour of mourning,” the kit manufacturer Hummel said in a post on Instagram releasing the black third-choice design. “While we support the Danish national team all the way, this shouldn’t be confused with support for a tournament that has cost thousands of people their lives.”

The designs seem to complete a promise made last November by the Danish football federation [DBU] to wear clothing with “critical messages” at the tournament.

Though Fifa’s World Cup rules prohibit political statements on team uniform, the three Denmark shirt designs in all-red, all-white and all-black appear to comply, with no words or symbols that are an explicit statement. The national team badge, Hummel logo and decorative white chevrons – a famous feature of the Denmark shirt since the 1980s – are faded into the same single colour as the shirt, but remain visible.

“We support the Danish national team all the way, but that isn’t the same as supporting Qatar as a host nation,” Hummel said.

It's actually good to see this news front and center because Qatar isn't as good at hiding it as other countries. Or the news is just better these days.

I hope Qatar is the last corrupt host.

IOC might finally have it's #### together. Next 5 Olympics are Paris, Turin, LA, Calgary(?), Brisbane

And the next World Cup is here and 2030 probably Argentina/Uruguay and then 2034 back in Europe, probably England.

I'll be watching it, in fact I've taken time off work for it but it's certainly the least interest I've ever had in a world cup.

Good on the Danes. I hope there's more player protests of that sort, I hope the Qatari team gets absolutely humiliated and I hope the whole thing is incredibly embarrassing for Qatar and FIFA.

One thing that might help is to remove Qatar from all the logos and reference including for TSN and all the other broadcasters and this thread.

Just call it the World Cup 2022.

I'd be shocked if the broadcast agreements would allow that.

Of course the broadcasts will have ironclad contracts that spell out what can and can't be shown.

Remember when (I believe it was Eriksen) was fined 100,000 euro at EURO 2012 because he lifted up his shirt to wipe his sweat and his underwear band was visible. Unapproved sponsor. They keep a tight lid on that.

It's not like the word Qatar is offensive. But I think no matter if you choose to boycott or not, the human rights abuses and grotesque wastefulness of this tournament should continue to be talked about throughout.

A/C in an outdoor stadium. Smh. Probably powered by oil fired generation plants.

As GS suggests, it's not the first corrupt host of a major international sporting event. History is full of similar.
But maybe it can be the last?
No idea what has to happen to make that so.

I think Bach and Infantino are pushing the organizations in the right direction. Better than their corrupt predecessors. Again, there is no schedule 'bad' olympics or world cup in the near future.

3 AM isn't great... but I don't mind 6:00, 9:00, 12:00 starts.

It almost feels right for watching Soccer / Football in the morning like that, that's when all the EPL, Serie A, champions league games tend to be and to me that just feels right.

Dont be so sure. Europe pays big money for the World Cup rights. In 1994, the majority of the games were played in the scorching mid-afternoon heat to be primetime in europe
