Monahan wanted a change and somebody will probably give him a big contract if he has a good season

Expiring contracts have value, you know. If the Flames manage to be bad enough, Toffoli might be our most important asset this year precisely because he isn't under contract next season.

Dunno what Dino is referring to but Monahan did say something along those lines in the interview posted yesterday. Long time coming, needed a fresh start, etc.

Could support the idea at least.

Yeah he said he wanted a change/fresh start

He said it in multiple interviews in the summer and yesterday. His best friend already left...I wouldn't be shocked if he is in Columbus next year.

Montreal is also playing with house money and no pressure right now. Fans and media are thrilled with their .500 record

Makes sense, thanks. Of course you have to take what he says after a trade with a grain of salt. He also sounded like a guy who loved it here so I highly doubt he asked to be dealt.

Tkachuk also loved it here apparently...he said it about 100 times this week.

Monahan flat out said he needed a change

I still think Monahan would have the same issue he always did lined up against top end centers/lines. Sure he’s healthy now but that doesn’t make him magically fast or a good defender. But one thing about him is that he always gives his effort. I think an engaged Kadri is better in pretty much all ways than Monahan but I don’t think Kadri has been engaged since the first eight games or so.

I think Kadri has hit the Stanley Cup hangover wall.

I expect him to come out it it post Christmas. Dude is probably exhausted.

Cup win, move to new city, expanded role in offense, new coach. etc etc.

He looks terrible, but I think he will round into form 2nd half once his brain catches up and settles in.

I think that’s part of it sure but I think there is also frustration with his linemates and such that he’s not handling well.

On the road trip Kadri setup both Dube and Mangi for basically tap ins and they somehow missed the net...hard to get points when your linemates can't finish.

I remember in the summer in the day before I received my Orange Julius news about Kadri leaning to sign with the Flames it was when Rear Admiral posted on Twitter teasing Lucic to Boston. I think the Flames were definitely working a deal that would have had a third team facilitating the cap space and Looch ending up in Boston.

When it was Monahan moved I felt good because he didn’t fit with the center depth but with that said he had a far better chance to rebound than Looch. I felt there was a high chance the Flames would look bad for this deal where there was no risk at all for the Habs and all upside. There is no way Lucic would have done much so definitely regretting the path the Flames took so far

Insert obligatory "Why do you hate Sean Monahan so much?" rhetoric.

Totally agree with your take - Kadri is better, and will be better longer at this point.

Kadri is worth Monahan and a 1st, no question.

Would have been a lot nicer if it was Lucic and a 1st, though.

LOL but there's teams short on shooting centers and no teams short on over-the-hill grinders.

Lucic was $750k in salary for a team. What needed to happen was for a team to eat half Lucic’s cap hit and likely take a player from Boston and move Lucic to the Bruins. Probably cost more than a 1st but right now looks like it would have been worth it.

And for Lucic to agree

Monahan missed last night with a lower body injury. One would think that it had something to do with the walking boot he's been wearing.

Edit - or maybe something new "Monahan left Monday's game against the Vancouver Canucks in the second period and did not return."
