Erixon was named to Sweden's latest training camp roster that is preparing first to the Euro Hockey Tour tournament and later to the World Championships. Current roster includes 10 d-man and Erixon is joined by other juniors Rundblad, Ekman-Larsson (and Hedman). He is propably just given experience (training, learning system etc. stuff) with the national team before NHLers and those who are still playing in SEL finals replace him. I doubt he lasts in roster for 10 more days and that's when Sweden plays their next game but anyway, this is nice news.

Giants eliminated tonight.
According to this article, Bouma will be playing pro next year:
Quote:
When the Giants are finally done, his junior career is undoubtedly kaput, too. Bouma inked a deal with the Calgary Flames this season and the Flames brass has repeatedly said that he'll spend his over-age season next year somewhere in pro hockey.
|
Might be already on his way to Abbotsford?

I bet. Bouma doesn't even want to be in the WHL anymore, he feels he has nothing left to prove there.

He was cut from roster yesterday. Ekman-Larsson and Rundblad are still in.

Well that sucks. Maybe he will come over to Canada and play in Major Junior next year. Anyone know who owns his rights?

I'd leave him in Sweden. He seems to be doing pretty well in the SEL and I think the CHL would be a step down.
So he got cut from the National team, some teams require different dynamics and other more experienced players were ahead of him in his role, doesn't mean he's worse than the other two.

Gaelan Patterson has signed an amateur try-out with Abbotsford.

Nice! I wonder what his chances are of drawing in to the lineup tonight... probably slim to none.

He has been with Heat for eight days now and hasn't made it in to the lineup yet so yeah, the chances are slim to none.

Heat probably won't make a change until it stops working. And they are working quite well right now haha.

What is the status of Howse? Kind of surprising that the Flames havn't signed him to a contract yet.

He is a 2009 draft. Flames have until just before the draft in 2011 to sign him. I am certain the Flames will. Hopefully he will build on his past season and be even stronger in the WHL next year.

So despite having (by all accounts) an amazing season Howse has another year to come in the WHL?
Wow. Can't wait to see this kid when he finally hits the NHL.

I would imagine Howse will receive serious consideration for the World Junior squad. I can't remember how many of the games will played in Calgary.

Buffalo is the host this year; Edmonton and Calgary host next year. Edmonton gets all of the Team Canada round robin games; Calgary gets all of the medal round games

He was drafted less than a year ago, he still has a lot to prove in the WHL. Last year he was a lone bright spot on an awful team, this year the team and Howse both improved dramatically and made the playoffs, hopefully next season Howse can lead Chilliwack to be one of the top teams of the WHL West. I would imagine Howse will get his WJC camp invite this summer.

Interesting quotes from playfair after the heat were eliminated:
On Shantz:
Quote:
“For me, the next thing with Dave is: can he get himself into good enough shape to be a top, top challenger for the No. 1 position in the American League?”
|
On Brett Sutter:
Quote:
“The deal with Brett is that he went to the National League and proved to himself that he can play up there,” said Playfair. “His leadership in the dressing room is a natural. He played very hurt, and he was our best player day in and day out.”
|
and lastly, and unfortunately, on Backlund:
Quote:
“He wasn’t anywhere near as good as he had to be for us to win,” Playfair said. “But he’s a young player. We forget that. This is his first year. I get frustrated with him. I expect more, because I’ve seen him give more.”

not a surprise to hear those words about Backlund. I suspect the biggest issue with most 20 year old players is consistency.
I've seen that a lot in his countryman, Patrik Berglund. Flashes of brillance, followed by shifts or games were he's invisible.
Backlund will figure it out. Playing 23 games, and spending over a quarter of the season in the NHL was a good first year
the Vancouver Sun has the same article with a little more detail
Quote:
"Mike's play did level off," Playfair said. "When he first came back, I thought he was below average.
"I thought he revved up and played very well in the middle and then went back below average at the very end."
In 13 playoff games, Backlund registered one goal and nine points.
"He wasn't anywhere near as good as he had to be for us to win," Playfair said. "But he's a young player. We forget that. This is his first year. I get frustrated with him. I expect more, because I've seen him give more. "
Backlund turned 21 in March.
"He's really had lots of ups and downs," Playfair said." But if you step back and take an objective look at it, it was a pretty good first year for Mikael Backlund."
