It could be that Fox and the Flames have agreed he will be signing a deal to come here but they want to wait before doing so. The reasoning being that the Flames are at 49 contracts right now and have their eyes on a college UFA or 2 that they want to pursue once those players season is done.
Then as of July 1 when several deals are off the books they can sign Fox and start his pro career in the fall after young stars tourney/training camp and have a better idea where he should be to play next season.
|
Maybe...
Another scenario could be agreeing to terms with a college UFA prior to July 1, a la Spencer Foo.

You can already sign players to contracts that start next season.
For example, the Kings signed Gabe Vilardi on March 1st to a contract that starts in 2018/19.
He doesn't count towards their roster limit in 17/18.

Another Harvard teammate signs with a NHL team.
Arizona Coyotes
@ArizonaCoyotes
OFFICIAL: #Coyotes Sign Madsen to Entry-Level Contract
Coyotes acquired Madsen's rights from the Flyers in the Nick Cousins trade. Madsen was set to become UFA on August 15. He was a senior so no more NCAA hockey was possible for him.

One signing was finished school at Harvard and the other gets to still go to school while playing for the bruins where he was today. Player goes to Harvard, I’m thinking getting them to leave midway is going to be hard.

Has there been any indication from either side on what might happen this offseason as far as him deciding to go back to school VS signing a contract?

According to this story, he's heading to Tucson for the rest of the year, which means no burned first year of his contract: http://www.thecrimson.com/article/20...-coyotes-2018/
Unlike their sad-sack parent club, the Roadrunners are gearing up for the playoffs, currently in first place in the AHL Pacific Division. Their current goalies have been working a pretty balanced load. All three of their goalies, including Madsen, are less than a year apart in age.

And another Harvard teammate signs with the Bruins.
https://www.nhl.com/bruins/news/brui...ct/c-297165490
Sherman was a 5th round pick of the Bruins in 2013. He was a senior and could have been UFA on August 15. According to the release he is joining the Bruins AHL team and the NHL contract starts next season.

Just a feeling but I doubt he signs with Calgary before he has his degree from Harvard. I imagine he will sign with the Flames eventually need to be patient. Adam Fox will need time to work on defence no sense rushing him.

It looks like Harvard had 7 drafted players on their roster this season: 2 freshmen, 2 sophomores, 1 junior, and 2 seniors.
So far, the junior and both seniors have signed NHL contracts with the teams that owned their rights.
Donato (56) is the only one who was drafted higher than Fox (66).

It probably won't go down like this. I feel slightly optimistic that he signs in Calgary early, but if he actually does go four years he's then two months away from being one of the hottest NCAA free agents in history.
He'll take that if he goes four years, imo. We can get him, but we need to convince him to leave early to do so.

Seems like this thread may be a bit premature given that he's just completing his sophomore year. Much more likely that next summer is when he's looking to sign his pro contract?

I think Hickey is still fresh in peoples' minds.
IMO if he doesn't sign this off-season, the Flames will probably use him as a trade chip to improve things for next year. The risk of him not re-signing is too great every additional year he plays NCAA.

For him professionally I don't think he stands to gain a lot by going back and seeing his point totals sink on a terrible team. The value of the contract and playing time offer he will receive will probably only get worse.

1. Harvard getting worse
2. Flames essentially out so a greater chance of burning a year and playing an NHL game this year than if they were in the midst of a battle.
3. Chance of getting hurt
He's too good a prospect to dick around. He'll sign in the next week to ten days.

I like the optimism, don’t think it’s as cut and dry but in terms of his development he has nothing else to gain from playing college hockey. Hopefully him and his agent feel the same way. There’s been zero indication on what he might do, besides the fact that he has attended the Flames prospect camp the last two years, like Janko did. I think if there was an indication he would not sign the Flames would’ve traded his rights at the deadline. Flames probably value him as one of their most promising prospects and with no first this year I doubt Treliving let’s him slip away. This isn’t Brandon Hickey, this is a player 2 to 3 tiers above Hickey.

Also for guys who are ready to go pro, when you look at the NBA players a consideration is that they are losing a year of pro earnings by prolonging their time in the NCAA. Even if he's in the A next year it's a year closer to free agency and an extra year at the end of his career he can still earn big.
Unless he has some doubt in his ability to play pro or he really doesn't like the Flames organization, which there's been no indication of, you think he'd go pro.
Only holdup I can think of is if the flames hardball him on burning a year and possibly getting 10 games if Stockton has a run. Which given the potential expansion draft in a couple years might be a consideration as that 7-3-1 model doesn't leave a lot of room for guys with 3 pro seasons.

That is not the only holdup. The fact that Fox is earning a Harvard degree is a huge incentive all on its own for him to stay in school.

He's still playing. He can't sign until his season is over.
BU is playing in the NCAA Tournament this weekend. If they can make it to the National Final, Arizona won't be able to burn a contract year on him.
