Why would we want Duclair? Huby is clicking with Sharongovich and we have too many wingers now. Unless we prefer to have Sharongovich / Cornonato on the 4th line. Can't see the upside.

Getting an asset to take a contract that has a year left and trying to flip it for another asset a-la Monahan, Gostisbehere, etc is easily the best move.
Potential targets for 2024-2025:
Joel Armia
David Savard
Christian Dvorak
Reilly Smith
Lars Eller
Codi Ceci
Radek Faksa
Jamie Benn
Esa Lindell
Ryan Suter
Nate Schmidt
Evgeny Kuznetsov
Dmitry Orlov
Brian Dumoulin
Robby Fabbri
Olli Maatta

Who would have the potential to be worth a 1st / north of 6M?

On that list I would have said only probably Benn or Kuznetsov...but Carolina did the weird thing and actually paid an asset for Kuznetsov, and Benn it probably depends on Dallas and if they get a contract crunch and want move him to sign somebody. (Pavelski, Duchene, Harley, Lundkvist, and Steel all need new deals)
I think getting a 2nd or 3rd to take a guy in that $3-4M range would be the more likely outcome this year...and then you hope you can flip him for more at the deadline.

I have a deep irrational hatred for Jamie Benn, but I could swallow that for 60 games or so if it means we get something out of it.

Trade Benn for a retained Coleman.
This would give Dallas a lot of cap space and a better player.
What is this worth to them??

The asset was probably for the 50% retention, not Kuznetsov himself.
If rumours about former Flames liking to party are true, I don't see the Flames bringing that kind of influence into a locker room filled with young players. They've probably worked pretty hard to get that attitude out of the room.

I'd look into bringing in one of the NYR D. Trouba could be a fun fit despite being overpaid. Gustafsson would be a great short term signing and will get the Flames assets as a rental. Lindgren is a solid RFA, I wouldn't mind sending a pick and sign him to 4-5 years.
Based on the demand for centers this year, a guy like Adam Henrique could be a great signing on a 1 year contract.
I think WPG might give the Flames a high pick, or prospect to take on Schmidt for a year.

With Hanley as the guy that can jump in anywhere in the bottom 4, whether by injury or one of the 4 having a bad game.

If they run that defense out there full time next year, they’re full on tanking.
So, here’s hopin, Y’know?

(1) Extend Mangiapane with a 8x8m contract
(2) Sign a James Neal 2.0 for 5x9m

Yeah, they only have to live with Benn's deal for one more year at age 35. And he's not terrible - he's got 42 points in 66 games. That's 4th place on the Flames (Coleman has 48). And he's coming off a 78 point year.
If they shed him it will be for a lot less than a superhaul.

Dallas has no reason to trade assets to give away Benn.
Dallas cap situation is actually great, probably the best in the league.

It would be if they wanted to add a player.
Pavelski, Duchene will require contracts. Pavelski probably doesn't get a raise but Duchene likely does.
Harley will need a big raise, and Lundkvist a slight raise, but they will still want to improve their defense in other areas likely
And 2024-25 is really a great chance for them to go for it while Oettinger ($4M), Johnson ($0.9M), and Stankoven are on great value deals before they require raises.
It would be tough to get Benn to waive his NMC which is the bigger issue but I think if they could move that cap hit out they would be interested.

Is 34 year old Matt Duchene getting a long term deal? He probably signs for 1 year, same with Pavelski. In a year that 9.8 comes off the cap, and they can spread that around.
If they have a contract to move it would be Seguin.

Exactly. Dallas can clear $9.5 off their cap to sign someone else (Duchene, Stephenson, Tanev, etc.).
They could even trade him to us with the intention that we buy him out and they re-sign him on the cheap.
To Calgary:
Jamie Benn ($9.5M)
Mavrick Bourque
2026 1st (unprotected)
2026 2nd
To Dallas:
Kuznetsov
Vladar
Dallas now has cap room ($27M) next year to sign:
Benn ($1.5M)
Duchene ($5M)
Pavelski ($3.5M)
Tanev ($4.5M)
Hanifin ($7.5M)
Valdar ($2.5M)
