This is how I feel about the system the Oilers use as well.
And I am an expert on these things because I played up to midget.

That escalated quickly. We've already fired him twice this season, now we're already talking about firing him next season?
I do agree with your first sentence though. That was a big flaw with Hartley -- there was no plan B if plan A wasn't working. At least we have evidence this year that Gulutzan is willing to tweak things over time.

I don't blame Hartley for the lack of a plan B. Hartley designed his system to make the best use of the limited talent available. If he had tried to make them play a conventional system, they would have been a losing team and he would probably have been fired in '14-15 instead of winning the Jack Adams.
The '15-16 team fell between two stools. They were no longer putting in the extreme effort that made Hartley's system workable, but they did not yet have the players to win by conventional tactics. This year the team is strong enough to win without gimmicks.

Why do people always want to use the term 'everyone'?
People do have differing opinions.

Yeap.
Some here were willing to give the guy some runway to attempt a take off.
Others were "glue gun this" and "glue gun that".
Other still were seriously wanting the organization to fire him and replace him with Hartley less than 10 or 15 games in.

Very true. I thanked the post because of the hilarious first gif. It was amazing how quickly Oiler fans came up with the "He's your Eakins" talking point. And it's great to see people coming around on Gulutzen, gotta be doing something right when people start making the celebratory gifs of you.
This might be the biggest face turn since Lex Luger slammed Yokozuna onboard the USS Intrepid.

This describes me perfectly. I was way down on GG for a very long time. And I could not be more happy to have been so very wrong. I'm also very happy smarter people than I are in charge of the Flames.

Smart puck support from 4 receivers requires IQ , skill and work ethic.
Receiving angles, eye contact, being an option more than once, saving your ice, width and depth, creating time and space, someone takes your ice...you take theirs, triangulation.
These concepts and sub principles take time to implement. It is how you create a strong puck possession team,
After 3 years of stretching and chipping and chasing the puck and game, this has become a very smart team that plays with the puck very well and possesses it for a far greater part of the game. 5 up the ice, together, with the puck...5 back with intent and purpose.
The transition has not been easy for him or the players.
GG has done an excellent job of transforming the Flames game and optimizing their amelioration.

In this thread, everyone nitpicking about a hyperbole in a post with a Gulutzan-Eakins gif
Yes, I am sure even Eakins had a few fans, and not Everybody Loves Raymond. Large majority had issues with Gulutzan, especially back in October.

I actually credit Treliving with more of the turnaround, believe it or not.
The team hasn't lost since he finally got a proper top 4 defenseman to shove Wideman out of there. Even goaltending improved because of this.

I've enjoyed this winning streak and how engaged this team finally is playing it.
Yeah it's not perfect and zone entries aren't clean every time but it beats watching failed dump and chase hockey.
They now know that it works and are all playing confidently.
Getting the d to be more active in certain games helps as well. All our d our playing better especially Brodie. It's been tough
Watching previously as I wondered how much it had to do with confidence.
I'm glad GG stuck to his guns and didn't divert from it.
Since doing so as well its made Elliot's life allot easier and now he's playing lights out for the most part ....not perfect but getting close......920 save percentage.
Playoffs here we come

So then would you credit BT for the poor performance up until the Montreal game? Genuinely curious

Sample size for evaluation is so important, especially when evaluating such a drastic tactical change. Hopefully a lesson learned for many.
