Does Giordano get suspended for the hit on Aho? Update:No hearing scheduled - Per NHL
No ref initially put their hand up to call a penalty when the hit happened. Giordano eventually ended up with a game misconduct on the play. I see it as Giordano had his shoulder down when he delivered the hit and the knee on knee was accidental. I'm wondering if the hit on Fowler works against him though... Thoughts?
Thanks Sureloss for the updates:
Update: Per the NHL, no hearing is scheduled regarding Mark Giordano's match penalty against Carolina on Sunday afternoon. #Flames
Sureloss - "No hearing means the most the NHL can fine him is $5000. There will be no suspension. It can also mean they aren't going to do anything.
If there is a fine the league must provide notice within 72 hours of completion of the game."
Sureloss - "Wes Gilbertson has confirmed no supplementary discipline for Giordano"

But will he is a different question that's anyone's guess.
The NHL's disciplinary system is as egregious and wildly inconsistent as it's on-ice officiating.
So the question is what are the chances they examine the play and make a mockery of a decision that flies in the face of their own rules? Who knows, hard to say.

I don't think he should, but I think he will.
1-2 games.

I would say, no. The match penalty was enough. The league has to also let the puck carrier know that they are also responsible for their own safety as well.

The rule is very specific: primary contact to the head. That was simply not the case.
Also, the intent to injure was clearly absent.
Finally, even though it shouldn't be a factor, whether the player is injured or not IS a factor. And I think we are going to here that Aho has a leg injury, not a head injury.
I think he likely will and they will use the knee on knee contact to support the suspension. I'm guessing 1 game. No shoulder to head contact. This is much like the receivers running into the DB in the CFL and getting a PI call.
Gio could have been standing still and Aho would have been in trouble the way he was looking down. All I saw was Gio tuck his arm, no intention. 5 mins and a game for getting hit by Aho.
Gio standing still, with shoulder and elbow tucked in will prevent him from being suspended in my opinion...but also, the league is a joke. So I won’t be surprised to see it anywhere between 0 and 3 games.
If the NHL wants no contact at all in the league then they should suspend Gio, otherwise they should apologize to him for being kicking him out of the game in the first place.
