Excellent game from him tonight. Haven't seen that amount of composure from a goalie in a long time
If he can keep playing like he did tonight it will be a good year

For a terrible night of hockey, Smith looked legit.
Huge positive, as you know the team will figure out how to score and play some form of defence eventually.

He also had better puck skills than most of our team tonight

The team certainly let him down tonight. They owe him big time.

Smith was excellent. I hope with his experience and leadership, he rips into that locker room tonight.
Huge sigh of relief in an otherwise poor game. He was excellent.

If Smith can keep this level of play up the Flames might actually be a real threat this year, and I bet he already gained the confidence of the team, unlike Elliott who started off his tenure by letting everyone down constantly. Smith looks really focused, and I loved how he seemed to draw pucks in like a magnet at times. I don't think I'll ever relax with him being away from the crease playing the puck so much though, but we best get used to it I guess. He sure are making some complicated plays here and there, that's for sure.

I liked everything I saw of Smith in that game. Loved his puck movement, loved his size, his composure and his saves. He looked like a great fit.

Smith plays old school. Got a statue of liberty save, got a good ole Hasek roll. All I was missing was a Hextall hack, but based on his fiestiness I don't think I'll have to wait long.
Elliott had a good run last year but it's been a while since a Flames goalie has given me confidence like Smith did last night.

I love that Smith won't take any S and doesn't need anyone to come to his rescue.
I'd have been happy to see him Billy Smith some random oiler last night.
Maybe he can help light a fire under his teammates. Wow we were bad in front of him last night.

Agreed, Smith was the best player on either team for most of the night. I supposed McDavid winds up being that, but Smith was really good.
Unlucky bounce on the first goal. Nobody stops the second one.
They'll get it figured out in front of him and it won't take a 5-10-1 start to get that accomplished.

Smith actually gave a pretty good love tap to an Oiler mid way through the first right in front of the night. I unfortunately didn't catch who the player was.

The thing that makes me sad about the Flames franchise is that we can never get both a solid goaltender and a solid skating line up at the same time. For years we had a workhorse goalie in Kipper. Yet the team in front of him played like crap. The past couple seasons we've had a good team. Yet the goaltending sucks. Even in the 90s, goaltending woes ruined decent teams upfront.
Now, we have a good group of skaters. And it appears Smith is a good goalie. I'm not just saying that because he was good last night. He looked like the guy in Phoenix. Calm, cool, playing the puck, and even showed some grit.
It would be oh so sweet if good goaltending and a good group of skaters could finally combine forces and become a great team.

I hated the decision to pull him. He was by far the best Flame last night and we just weren't producing up front. There was no way we were going to score 2 goals with him pulled, so why bother? End up giving McD the hat trick.

Losing the opener is a given. Smith was a huge bright spot. Start fresh at home, with Jagr - fire Brouwer into the sun, bring in Jankowski. Season starts Saturday.

With any of the other goalies we've had since Kipper's departure, this would have been a complete blowout. Smith was amazing. He made all of the basic saves plus a few big ones.
With our previous tandem this would have been a 6-0 game, which would have left me feeling obliterated, instead of just slightly disappointed.

Smithjesus right? man I hate edmonton.
Smith was one of the very, very few bright spots last night which makes it easier to coupe with a performance like that. Once the team gets their crap together; with goaltending like last night we should be a force.

Smith is the only one that came to play last night.
Which is embarrassing. For everyone else.
"All we need to compete is League Average goaltending."
That doesnt mean the rest of you get to take the season off as a vacation.
Its Game #1. Against our Provincial/Division Rivals. And everyone not named 'Smith' didnt show up? I dont have words.
I hope they have to re-paint the visitor's dressing room at Roger's.
