The pubic house is okay.

They have a decent craft beer selection but the wrong beer from each brewery.

Food is standard pub fare. Decent food. I enjoyed the Pizza with bacon Jam on it.

I'll preface this by saying we loved The Smith when it was in this building, so my opinion isn't really unbiased.

We had an early dinner at Canyon last night, we we're kinda split on our opinion. I had the steak frites and my wife had the chicken club.

My steak was actually really good, better than I expected from a pub style restaurant. Excellent fries as well. My wife's chicken club just kinda was... it wasn't bad... it wasn't great... it was a middle of the road chicken sandwich.

Which sorta sums up the dining experience as well. I'd go back on the strength of my steak frites, and maybe it's better for brunch, but I kinda found the experience lacked any specific character.

Which is a shame due to the unique building they occupy.

Amazing new French Bistro opened up in Inglewood serving classic french comfort food at great prices.

The Eden is the definition of local and family owned and operated. You won't be disappointed coming here over the holidays.

Deane House Is this new? All I remember about the Deane House is going to crappy diner mysteries there during lame office parties.

(I assume I am correct that the Deane House is the located at the west end of 9th ave right before it crosses the Elbow.

Correct - I believe it was placed under new management after the flood. It is owned and operated by the same group as River Cafe. Excellent restaurant.

That's the place, but it's changed quite a bit. It was hit hard by the floods and closed down for a few years. Now it's a nice restaurant and I was only there once but the food was great.

White Rose and Coal Shed will be closing shortly...our last day is Saturday the 16th. On behalf of the owners and staff, we would like to extend a very heartfelt thank you to all of our valued guests; we are so grateful and appreciative for all of the support. We hope to see you for one last visit before next Saturday...please reserve so we can be prepared! Thanks again, it has been a pleasure serving you.

It's a very difficult time to be a small business in Calgary, and ultimately in comes down to the fact that expenses are higher than revenues. We are a husband and wife ownership team and have few options available to us when ends don't meet.

When you lease commercial space, you get two rates: The cost of space the landlord wants to charge you, and operating costs. Prop taxes are in the op costs (along with heat, electricity, cleaning, etc).

Everybody acknowledges that op costs are mostly beyond the control of the landlord.

But they can move on their sqft cost.

Thing is The Core wants to keep their charge high, seeing as it's probably at least a class A space Double Zero was in.

Whitehall on Edmonton Trail & Meredith Road is closing on the 23rd. I never did make it there, always wanted to, but we don't eat out as much as we used to.

I posted this in the Ramen thread a while back, but Carino was my favorite Ramen place in Calgary. They closed about a year ago at Edmonton trail to focus on their up scale Carino Reserva on 4th St.

Anyways, they just brought back Ramen for lunch at Carino Reserva. You can also order off skip the dishes. Total win win. I had it yesterday and it was just as good as I remember.

Bears Den in Bearspaw closing at the end of the month. Partially blaming rising costs and the poor economy in general. Been in business 14 years I think.

Vics is good indeed but I think it was sold about 6 months ago and the food is a little blander now that it used to be.

I'm assuming all of this as the guy in the black leather vest was different as of 6 months ago.

Looking for recommendations in Chinatown for the family this weekend. In particular, maybe somewhere to get duck for lunch. I recall a place a long time ago that was Hong Kong style and had ducks hanging in the window, and offered a noodle soup with half a duck chopped up on. Can't recall the name.

Not looking for anything fancy, just a lunch a little bit different from the usual suburban fare. And no, not interested in dim sum.

Are you thinking of Vic's at the corner of 3rd and Center? Used to be called Happy Valley.

Yeah, that could be it.

Also see there's a place called Sun BBQ. Anyone recommend it?
