Everyone is scrambling right now and no one wants to be left on the alter.

it sucks for sure...for all the talk of moral high ground that the NCAA stands on (particularly not allowing athletes to be paid, which only changed this year) coaches have been allowed to be mercenaries for a long time.

Pressure now will be on Fickell to publicly put out his intentions with the playoffs looming.

Unless ND simply chooses to promote Freeman their DC to the HC position, which is possible, as ND sees itself as an academic institution first, and likes stability... its not a bad hire, but Freeman is a bit of a risk as he's never been an HC

It would be hilarious if ND makes it into the playoffs and they win the NC and Kelly gets fired in 3 years

As to who OU should go with?

Venables would work. He’s been at OU previously and has been part of a team that has won two titles. And he’d likely up OU’s defense to boot.

If you wanted someone who is currently a head coach, then I don’t think that there are any real options.
Venables would be my choice as a fan. But Mark Stoops at Kentucky is another possibility. He's familiar with OU and also the SEC.

Just before I saw this post, I noticed on Google that he’s signed a contract extension with Kentucky, so it is unlikely he’d jump to OU now.

But as to his familiarity with OU, are you confusing him with Mike Stoops?

I think college coaches do still jump after signing contracts; its just a question of how the contract is structured.

If OU is willing to payout the buyout in the Kentucky contract, I think Stoops can leave if he wants too.

WHOA.... Looks like USC & Lincoln Riley about to get hit with a major recruiting violation. A 5 star defensive back recruit was quoted as saying he spoke with Alex Grinch and was texting with Coach Roy Manning who used to be at Oklahoma re: USC recruiting.

You see the problem was Roy Manning was still employed by OU and in act was out with Bob Stoops at that time recruiting for Oklahoma.

I hope USC gets sanctioned. What sweet justice that would be.

not a good look for Riley and Manning...

the NCAA are pretty gutless though, can't see this as more than a slap on the wrist.

Nothing on major news outlets for this yet, is this still in the salty sooner fan category? Not that it isn’t legitimate just asking

I am offended by Salty Sooner fan moniker. I guess we are upset but not because he left. But because of the way he did.

It's being talked about by media in Oklahoma. Lots of tweets being shared. OU's Official Compliance twitter, tweeted Lincoln's eye emoji (one he used for recruits).

Well at least Brian Kelly going against the notion that people don't want to coach in the SEC.

Not much downside for him, he's 60. Worst case scenario for him is the Tiger faithful run him off after three years like they did with Coach O. He banks close to $30 million in that time and walks away from coaching at 63 with additional severance pay on top of that.

Plus I think he's probably done as much at ND as possible.

Everything that's coming out about Riley makes it seem like he quit on OU in September; recruited all those California kids on OU dimes. He is nothing but a snake.

By severance, you mean his whole pay of 10 million/year for 7 years? These coaching contracts are guaranteed I think. It's pretty gross but all these public "schools" are paying 500 million in dead money to coaches every year. https://www.axios.com/sports-footbal...983872120.html

Depends on how the contract is structured but it sounds like Kelly's is almost 100% payout if he is terminated early. Pretty good deal for him! They are paying Ed Orgeron almost $17 million not to coach them anymore on top of that.

Clay Helton is being paid $12 million not to coach USC and they are also paying OU something like $4.5 million to buy out Riley's contract.

It's nuts.

That was not a forward pass. But I’d like to see Ok st lose so I’m ok with the blown call.
