Flames Flames recall Gillies on emergency basis. Brouwer placed on IR

per AHL transactions

the only question is how long does he stay up?

I suspect Rittich plays all the games Smith misses, unless it's gonna be a long time.

Anyone been watching him on the Heat lately? Hows he been playing?

Sucks if we lose Smith, but not too worried. Either Rittich is as good people are hoping, in which case we won't lose a step, or the team shows they don't need great goaltending to win games...

and if it turns out this team has been carried by goaltending, that's not necessarily a bad thing to expose.

I think Smith has played too much and Rittich too little anyway. Smith needs rest and Rittich deserves games.

Sucks for Brouwer, but that's a nice amount of salary to put on IR.

He has been inconsistent in the AHL but also this has been his best season to date. So he is developing well as it would appear

Parsons got injured in a collision with Wotherspoon and is being re-evaluated. MacDonald looks like the go to guy in Stockton for the time being.

I have faith in Rittich to hold the fort. Hopefully Gillies shows what he's got if he gets a chance.

The silver lining of this injury is that it's a good opportunity for pretty much all the goalies in the Flames system to show what they can do at the next level of their development.

Rittich can take the next two road games vs. Boston and Nashville, then the team will be home to the Panthers Saturday. Smith might be okay by then.

I've watched a few Heat games this year and I've been pretty unimpressed with Gillies. He's so big but he plays so aggressive which leads him to be out of position. He's athletic enough to make those amazing desperation saves, but if he played a little deeper and had better rebound control he wouldn't have to make those saves.

I'd like him to model his game after Rinne or even Lundqvist, but he plays like a small goalie trapped in a big goalies body. So often I'll see him "swimming" in his crease. That's where a goalie is always trying to make that big toe save. The problem with that is it's a desperation play. Your belly is basically on the ice and you have no recourse of the puck changes direction. You can't push back the other way and the entire top half of the net is open.

Rittich, on the other hand, is very calm. Plays much deeper than Gillies, isn't as aggressive, and has slightly better rebound control. He doesn't often make those big desperation saves because he doesn't have to.

At the end of the day neither of these guys has the glove hand or the rebound control that Smith has. I wonder if BT looks at making a move if Smith re-aggravates his groin or the healing process doesn't go as scheduled.

Maybe not, but I trust Rittich's five hole a lot more than Smith's.

We'll see what happens, but I'm willing to see what Rittich can do in an expanded role.

I have a friend in Stockton who is a season ticket holder and all indications are that Gilles has been playing better of late and no coincidence gaining confidence.

My friend also indicated that his positioning has really improved since the start of the season.
