Bc ramped up its rhetoric over the weekend and yesterday.

Motley promised to respond. What do we see? What can we expect?

It's pretty hilarious that they're challenging the wine ban.

Notley basically called Horgan a Trump supporter, and Trudeau is accusing him of undermining Canada's national environmental strategy. I'd say the rhetoric has been stepped up on both sides.

It's still all talk though.

I watched the news this morning, and it was kind of funny.

"Wah, they're targeting a specific BC industry, no fair"

Yeah and you're province has done what exactly?

"What, they can't stop the flow of products across provincial boarders"

Yeah and what do you call what you're doing.

Here's the funny thing, they're kind of right, in terms of the agreements signed, except from what I heard this morning, there's a rider in the provincial trade agreements that the Alberta Liquor and Gaming commission does have the right to determine products under their mandate license to move into Alberta.

Look talk and rhetoric is all find and dandy, but that's exactly what BC wants, because they can delay this thing, with talk, they can delay this thing with permit issues, they can delay this thing by running to court.

their end goal is to make Kinder Morgan throw in the towel and take their money elsewhere. Their end goal is to delay this until the end of the year.

At some point it needs to get passed Rhetoric and onto real points, Notley has done it on an Alberta level, not because its going to change BC's mind, but because its a shot across the bow of the Federal Government.

At some point soon, either Trudeau is going to collapse and decide on more consultations and meetings which will become deadlocked and solve nothing.

Or

He's going to have to verbally come out and warn BC that they're risking infrastructure funding from the Federal Government for this year.

Is it really that surprising they're challenging the wine ban? That was the first thing I expected them to do. It won't cost us much when we lose. But what a stupid way to get a win. We lost less than you! Yay!

I'm not a lawyer (let alone a lawyer specializing in trade disputes) but from what I've read it's not that clear that BC will win at all, since it's not actually a 'ban'. The AGLC (which happens to be the only alcohol importer/distributor for AB) has been instructed to stop purchasing BC wine. You are free to drive to BC and bring back as much BC wine as you can carry.

Are you? I thought there is still a law against transporting liquor across provincial boundaries (even though it's rarely enforced).

For commercial use? Yeah.

For personal use? go nuts.

I think the was some old prohibition era law that limited what you could bring over in the past. I think this is a pretty recent change (a few years).

Scotiabank put out a report that gives some estimates on what pipeline delays are costing Canadian producers: http://www.gbm.scotiabank.com/scpt/g...2018-02-20.pdf

Quote:
If maintained at current levels, discounts would cost the Canadian economy roughly C$15.6 billion per year, or 0.75% of GDP.

As the oil-by-rail pickup continues, we anticipate that WCS discounts will fall to around $18/bbl later this year, which will reduce the opportunity cost to roughly C$10.7 billion in 2018, or 0.5% of GDP. We estimate that annual losses associated with transporting marginal crude by rail rather than pipeline will settle at C$7 billion (about 0.3% of GDP) in 2019–20 until additional pipeline capacity comes into service.

Can Notley block the appeal until conducting more studies on the impacts of BC vineyards with respect to their environmental impacts on the Okanagan Valley? we need more studies...

how about we study how slowing down the flow of wine from BC will reduce the amount of alcohol in the province and thus reduce drunk driving and saving lives

I'm more concerned about the constant deforestation of BC for their harmful timber industry and the raping of environmentally sensitive ecosystems just to plant a non-domestic invasive species (grape vines) requiring an insane volume of water to irrigate. Why won't they ever think of the environment!

In any case the only thing that a panel can do is order a maximum one-time fine of $10 million. It can't order Alberta to buy BC wine, and a panel can only be formed after a minimum consultative process of 4 months.

What about the deforestation of Alberta by B.C. companies ?

Do you like the drive west from Longview up highway 40? You won’t in another year or two.

I’m actually pretty surprised this, and few other forestation allowances recently haven’t been more publicly decried.

Why spend money to treat sewage like every other city in North America when there's the astronomically low probability of catastrophic tanker failure to fight against.
