Two rookies who were among their teams best defensemen... that’s rare. Among the leagues best defensemen even.

Maker and Hughes were both incredible this year. I think this is a fairly tight race between them.

I hope Makar wins it, being a local boy, but both these kids had a really good rookie season.

Makar is probably going to win it. Had a ton of hype early on, has more goals and is a flashier player (they're both flashy but Makar is Mackinnon-style flashy, whereas Hughes is Gaudreau-style flashy).
Third place is interesting. I thought it was more likely to be a player from the east; Blackwood, Fox or Olofsson.

Could be back to back for the nucks with Calder winners.
A 1C last year and a 1D this year.
Apparently they just signed a point per game harvard dman that they drafted a couple years ago too.

I must have been sleeping most of the year- I was absolutely shocked to see that Kubalik spanked in 30 goals. Is he the oldest player since Makarov considered for a Calder?
That being said, I think this will be Makar. No slight to Hughes, but I think he's the better overall package. Colorado got pretty obscenely lucky.

I thought Fox too, but it would be pretty crazy to have a 3 way calder race between relatively undersized defensemen.

There is no wrong answer between Makar and Hughes.
I am just supremely happy that Quinn Hughes is a Vancouver Canuck. He has played one season and talent wise he is already one of the best the Canucks have ever had. By the end of the next season, I don't think there will be any question about.
Also, yes, Jack Rathbone is also apparently really good.

Between Hughes and Makar, who plays the best defence, aside from points?

Jealousy from the voters, obviously.
The same reason no Oiler has ever won the Calder.

It's too bad Jack Hughes was underwhelming and couldn't compete against his brother for the Calder this year. That would've been fun.

Apparently, if you ask Devil's fans, by about a month in if his line mates could bury anything he would have been up there in scoring.

Have to agree.
Both really dynamic players and fun to have on your team.
Makar seems to have more cache for some reason though so i suspect he wins. Either guy is just fine though.
Kubalik is a good nomination as well. 30+ goals as a rookie is heady stuff.

Makar has an edge in raw offensive numbers
Quinn has a lead in defensive numbers and metrics. If I were to make a case, it would be that Quinn Hughes has amazing offensive metrics as well, but I don't think Makar's defensive outlook was that bad either.
They're just both really good.

I hate the Canucks. Makar is from Calgary. Therefore I think Makar should win.
I'm sure I can find stats to support this position if I look.
