Emirates is ceasing all passenger flights on Wednesday. Their cargo division will continue to operate.

I suppose that isn't too surprising since the majority of their flights (if not all?) would be international.

Not all passenger flights, but a majority

Will be interesting to know the details of what they offered in order to get a 90% volunteer rate.

For the early retirement and early out it was a pretty decent offering, at least in my situation and my opinion. Can't share any details until my package is finalized as I don't want to get in trouble and lose my offer.

That's just devastating for the Westjet team. Hopefully, we can get through this and a good number of folks get brought back on board.

They are putting quite the spin saying they had 90% volunteers. The company sent out 4 options and you HAD to choose one of them. If you didn't, you had early out chosen for you and you won't be coming back.

No, I don't work for WestJet, but I know and communicate with lots of people who do.

YYC fuel usage has gone from 2 million liters per day at the start of this month to less than 700,000 yesterday.

Air Canada has reduced it's domestic schedule even further than what they just announced last week, dropping another 1000 flights/week from a very think schedule. Almost cutting it in half again. It's staggering to see what some major cities will be seeing. For example Winnipeg will have 4 flights/day on Air Canada and that includes mainline and feeder.

Interesting that WestJet here is now the biggest operation by anybody in the country. At 470 departures that's still roughly 40% of what would typically be ~950-1,000 weekly departures at this time.

Are those all passenger flights, or is there a lot of repositioning going on right now?

Virtually no repositioning flights, just passenger flights.

Of course the schedule is pretty fluid right now.

Yup, not sure that 90% voluntary number is totally accurate....

Looks like WestJet is still committed to launching the Rome flight this summer, even if it gets pushed to August. A glimmer of hope.

Definitely adding spin by the marketing department but at this point almost anything is good news in the airline industry. WestJet is not allowing middle seats to be booked on their jets, and only every other seat to be selected on their Q400's. Not that this was a problem these days.

Yeah with flights going out at 20% capacity, people were already doing a pretty good job of staying apart, so it didn't take much effort. Might as well just block them in an attempt to spur bookings.

WestJet sends layoff notices to 1,700 pilots amid dramatic reduction in air travel

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calga...offs-1.5534007

Quote:
Issuing layoffs, in response to this crisis, has always been a last resort for WestJet; however, the impact of COVID-19 on the aviation industry is colossal, and WestJet is making difficult but necessary decisions to right-size our airline to weather the crisis. These actions will play a crucial part in WestJet's ability to recover quickly and participate in Canada's economic recovery."

The Air Line Pilots Association, the union representing the pilots, said in a statement emailed to CBC News that its "negotiation goal is to arrive at an appropriate balance between short-term economic accommodations and protecting the value of the jobs remaining.
