Not an option for many lines of work that receive dozens of calls a day from unknown numbers.

I know that I have passed over individuals/companies because the phone wasn't answered and moved onto the next one in line.

I hang up everytime I can so the call is not registered, no screen call or voicemail.

I have messed around with the google guys calling about registering your business on maps. He got royally pissed at me and started swearing. I will answer my google number since it has no ties to who I actually am and mess with people.

Yeah, unfortunately I get a significant number of business calls that I need to answer. That means I also listen to a lot of recorded scam crap.

lol, okay. I have a phone because people need to reach me more than I need to reach them. The better solution would be for dopes to stop being so stupid as to fall for these blatantly obvious scams.

We even receive calls on the police non emerg line to tell us we’re being arrested by... I guess, us. (In fact they say RCMP, but still amusing nonetheless)

On iOS the latest update lets you send numbers that aren't in your contact list or email straight to voicemail. I signed up for visual voicemail through my provider, and notice Apple now provides a transcript of the call, so you can easily filter out the garbage. It's a bit risky as my number is also my business number, but 2 weeks in and I haven't missed anything important (well... I don't _think_ I have). The only gotcha is when I used a callback feature while on hold. That sucked.

Only on Pixel devices for now, but that may change soon

According to XDA Developers, which performed the teardown, Call Screen will soon allow Google Assistant to answer calls from unknown numbers on your behalf. If it detects a robocall, it will decline it silently without interrupting you. Unknown numbers will ring a few moments later, and Assistant will save a transcript of the call. It won’t screen any numbers saved in your contacts. Further, if Assistant isn’t able to automatically screen the call, it will ring through as usual, and users will be able to manually initiate Call Screen (in other words, it’ll work as it currently does.) The functionality hinted at in the code sounds similar to Apple’s ‘Silence Unknown Callers‘ feature that launched with iOS 13.

I've had 9 scam calls today. I have to answer the ones with local numbers because they could be a potential customer but I've also got some from Romania and Peru. It's really annoying.

I may be the least tech astute of all of you but I’ve had like two of these calls in the last 12 months. I don’t get it. Maybe it’s because I use my phone only as a phone?

Nothing for months and then today, 4 calls from the "Dept of Justice". I've blocked spam calls but that doesn't prevent them from going to voicemail it would seem.

Phone doesn't actually ring, just get a VM notification.

Visual Voicemail and transcription is my favourite phone feature.

I have 2 co-workers who cannot resist answering each and every call. Always a gibberish number or nothing on the display, still can't help themselves.

Which is hilarious because by answering the phone they're now a target as their names are sold to calling lists.

I always find the scam stuff fascinating.

People that get the email. We turned on your webcam and caught you watching porn, send us money or we'll let everyone see the video.

I mean that one has caught so many people when you read about it.

The CRA one for some reason catches people, and they think they're paying their tax bill with gift cards.

We should be looking back in awe that people get caught in these things.

The other one that was huge for a while was your long lost relative in jail scam, that one caught so many old people.

I got that one and it scared me, not because I watch porn but because they had one of my passwords. I came here for advice and learned about it then I moved to LastPass. Now my password would take over 200 years to crack.

LastPass eh? I’m reading about it now and this seems very interesting. I have so many passwords I struggle with them, and don’t trust the Apple password thing.

Until quantum computers become commonplace or accessible by hackers, at least.

there is a person on twitch.tv that scam baits these guys. he will call them back and pretend to be an old lady and just waste their time. it's hilarious and very enlightening to see the tactics these guys use.

his old lady character is both the best and worst because while you are watching and it's funny, its also kind of sad that you get to see the tactics these scumbags use to trick little old ladies into giving them their life savings
